First let me say that the buttermilk donuts are really good - flaky and sweet with just right amount of buttery tang that earmarks a good buttermilk doughnut. The fritters are also very good - nice crunch. So good job there.
That being said, the maple bars are just so-so and the old fashioned doughnuts, which I have tried twice, have an off-flavor in the glaze, and they totally lack the crunch that sets a premium old fashioned from the run-of-the-mill grocery store offering.
I would drop in regularly just to get the buttermilk doughnuts or a fritter, but several times when I went in they were out of one or the other.
In addition to doughnuts, they offer espresso drinks. The coffee is not spectacular. It is obvious that the girls making the latte's are not trained baristas, but then it's a doughnut shop, not a coffee house. Still...
They also serve ice-cream, but I'm not sure that that isn't more of a distraction from delivering excellence with the doughnut business.
The staff are always friendly, but I get the feeling that the ownership/management limits their ability to serve their customer's needs. Nobody wants to be told that there are no more fritters and no more will be made until tomorrow (especially when it is only 9:00 in the morning), no matter how polite and helpful the girl behind the counter is. This is not a failure on the employee's part. With a small business like Donut Dugout, it's most likely due to an owner that's out of touch with his customers.
In this day of the readily available grocery store doughnut, a dedicated doughnut shop has to offer something that the grocery store doesn't. That starts with a top quality, irreproachable doughnut - every doughnut, every time. Everything you offer should be noticeably better than the bargain priced grocery store offering. And, you have to have all of your donuts available during business hours with few exceptions. If you are charging $1.59 for a doughnut that your customer can buy a block away for 89 cents, you have to prove that your product is worth the difference.
Conclusion: While there are a couple of doughnuts there that I really like, the fact that they are likely to be out of them keeps me from going back. Because, if I get there and the doughnut I like is sold out, the rest of them are not...
Read moreWent in at 650pm for dine-in coffee and donuts.. place was not busy at all.. counting me there were 3 customers in the whole place. Was told the coffee was out but could be ready in about 6 min. After 15 min. I went to the counter again to ask about my coffee.. took a few min for someone to get back to th counter and notice me waiting. I saw the coffee pump-pot appears to be filled and a medium cup waiting near the pot.. unsure why I wasnt either told it was ready or brought the coffee. I asked about the coffee and why I was not made aware it was ready.. no real response except "Im sorry" .. when I asked for a manager/owner card witha phone number to call.. I was told "we dont really have those".. Im unsure who runs this place but apparently they dont really care about the service here... thats ok.. I dont need to go back. I prefer to actually eat and have the beverage within the time promissed.. not just forgotten when there was 3 customers in the whole place..
Since the employees are not allowed to give the contact info for customer service issues.. I will leave it here.. and bet there will be no response...
5/29: update.. still have not heard from the owners/managers.. customer experience appears to be the lowest priority...
Read moreI got deceived! Donuts not as gross as advertised in the name; they were actually pretty good! I feel cheated cause I enjoyed them so much. The sweetness and softness as they went down my throat gulping with delight made my experience interesting and satisfactory, which was a bummer cause I didn't get what I deserve, I got more than the bucks I paid with. These donuts rocked my world instead of bringing disappointment. No sir, these are not gross donuts, these are the donuts of the future, the donuts that will cure this pandemic, the donuts that will bring the world together and peace to the restless heart! These my friends are the donuts you've been looking for, these are the donuts that will bring balance to the force. These are the only friends you'll ever need, these will always be in my heart!
