I know that you might love Mexican food however how much do you think an individual restaurant can offer? Los Chanquis dazzles with choices in the neighborhood of 100 menu items. Homemade, tasty, some of the best I've had the pleasure to enjoy and I've eaten at dozens and dozens of Mexican food establishments in my 48 years in Arizona and food visits to New Mexico, California, and Sonora State.
My waiter Chris knows exactly what's available and what's not since many hungry diners might be me to the Chili Rellenos or Fish Tacos, my top choices. I also can't wait to order another Chicken Chimichanga plate since it is both filling and just plain awesome tasting. You won't believe that Los Chanquis can offer so many dishes, yet they can and do. Just amazing...
The folks here know how to provide a cool atmosphere as well in an older, restored bank building with outdoor seating in warm weather. Like Chris, the other crew members are friendly and help you in any way needed. In the back of the restaurant there is also a well-used pool table where locals can match talents. Start a game yourself and enjoy.
I guarantee that if you love Mexican food, especially traditional recipes, you will become a regular at this establishment. Be careful of the Habanero hot sauce, though, it is full-strength and undiluted. It's true fire for those who like to burn. I like my hot sauces, but took a tiny, tiny taste and then went back to the...
Read moreI was driving through New Mexico on my way back to Denver. My wife and I were ready for lunch but instead of getting fast food along the interstate we decided to drive through RATON to patronize a local business. Sometimes we get a good surprise when we try a local place and sometimes not so much. We stopped at Los Chanquis in hopes of the former but we ended up with the latter. The place is clean and looks good and has Mexican music playing - all good signs. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and carne asada tacos from the wall menu without prices (huh?) and sat down to wait for our orders. There were no chips like most Mexican joints and no real waitstaff - kind of a cross between a restaurant and a food truck and a school cafeteria? The food came out - everything served on styrofoam and plastic. My chicken enchiladas were pretty good but the cuts of meat used for the carne asada tacos were tough and not very good tasting. All that might be OK but we paid $15 per plate without any drinks or chips.
Verdict - if your car breaks down in Raton next to this restaurant and you’re hungry then I’d suggest ordering the chicken enchiladas - otherwise pass on this one and try one of the other small...
