Cal's presents as an outstanding alternative to the predominant North shore ice cream. You know the one. It is a profound that they attempt their own flavors, and with great success. I've now been to Cal's twice in the last several days. The first trip was a reconnaissance mission to prepare myself for a visit with a good friend of mine and his family. The second trip was the rendezvous with my friend, who is, by all accounts and appearances, a very stable genius. We attended the same elite high school (you've never heard of it) and, despite this, we maintain a common touch. And a love of ice cream. My friend was pleased with the maple walnut, which packs a significant protein punch when one has skipped dinner. I was delighted to see my daughter choose peach, which she readily consumed with aplomb. My other daughter went with the rainbow sherbet, which she assured me was bomb. On my first trip I had a hot fudge sundae. I have to confess that I was not able to finish it. I praise you for the generous portion, and praise myself for not having gone into a sugar coma (the result of eating the entire offering, one forecasts). On my second trip I settled into the root beer float, a deliciously creamy concoction. Now, I will say something that is somewhat sacrilegious in these pages. No one has ever improved on the Häagen-Dazs vanilla, but Cal's comes reasonably (or is it regionally?) close. The ice cream world is full of emulsifiers and many of them needless. Cal's is not exempt from this observation and mild critique. Well that's my view. And what do I know, never having served my own ice creams to many dozens of VERY happy patrons on a hot...
Read moreThis place is legit the best ice cream on the North Shore, possibly all of Massachusetts (dare I say New England???). To the best of my knowledge, all of the ice cream (not sure about the frozen yogurt) is homemade and with the highest quality ingredients. The ice cream is incredibly creamy and so, so delicious. You will find flavors with loads of fudgy homemade brownies, cookies or other seasonal treats. The owner is always experimenting with creative new combinations. The absolute best, IMO, are crazy cow (loaded with brownies & cookie dough), nutella chip (so creamy!!), pumpkin cannoli (seasonal), and peppermint bark (seasonal). But really, you cannot go wrong with any of them!! They also offer real, dark chocolate sprinkles as a topping which are the way to go if you like sprinkles. You will never be able to eat grocery store sprinkles again! Ice cream cakes are perfection with a whipped cream topping and less expensive than some other local shops. My only wish is that they would make some fun frozen yogurt flavors so I could indulge more frequently and with a bit less guilt!! This place is truly special and worth a trip (or two, or three....). Oh! And the pizzeria next door has THE BEST...
Read moreWow! I finally stopped into Cal's Creamery to try their non-dairy ice cream today and it made me sooo happy!! They had FOUR non-dairy flavors. The server was happy to offer me samples of the two flavors that I asked about. Once I tried both, I really couldn't decide between them, so I ordered a double scoop... one of each flavor.
The ND ice cream is very creamy, and rich in flavor and texture!! The flavors are creative and I asked if they make their own non-dairy ice cream. She said they make it right in-house and they use coconut milk. My choices were Blueberry Crumble and Black Raspberry OREO. Amazing. Truly AMAZING!
I really appreciate that Cal's has multiple delicious non-dairy ice cream flavors. As a vegan, it's so great to find quality, yummy non-dairy options in the suburbs. It's my new...
