I recently had the pleasure of visiting Freewheel, and I must say, it was an experience worth savoring. As a craft beer enthusiast, I was drawn in by the promise of a quality Hazy IPA, and I left with not only a contented palate but also a newfound appreciation for their culinary prowess.
Let's start with the star of the show – the Hazy IPA. Freewheel has truly mastered the art of crafting a Hazy IPA that's a symphony of hops and malt. The beer poured with a beautiful, hazy golden hue and boasted a delightful aroma that hinted at the tropical and citrus notes within. Each sip was a journey through layers of flavor, from the initial burst of juicy fruits to the subtle undertones of pine. It's evident that the brewers here take pride in their craft, delivering a well-balanced and memorable brew that will keep me coming back for more.
Now, let's talk about the food. The buffalo chicken sandwich was a revelation. The chicken was perfectly cooked, with a crispy exterior that gave way to tender, succulent meat inside. The buffalo sauce had just the right amount of heat, providing a zesty kick without overpowering the other flavors. The sandwich was artfully assembled with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and a hint of blue cheese – a combination that elevated the dish to a gourmet level.
What sets Freewheel apart is the seamless integration of their beer and food offerings. The staff was knowledgeable and eager to recommend beer pairings for the menu items. The synergy between the Hazy IPA and the buffalo chicken sandwich was particularly noteworthy – each bite complemented by a sip of the refreshing brew, creating a harmonious dining experience.
The ambiance of the brewery added to the overall enjoyment. The rustic yet modern décor, combined with the hum of conversation and the occasional clink of glasses, created a convivial atmosphere that encourages patrons to linger and savor the moment.
In conclusion, Freewheel is a gem for both beer aficionados and food enthusiasts. The Hazy IPA and buffalo chicken sandwich showcase the commitment to excellence that permeates every aspect of this establishment. I'll certainly be returning to explore more of their offerings and to bask in the delightful marriage of craft beer and culinary artistry. Cheers to Freewheel for a...

Read moreOne of the few places in the bay you can get delicious, faithful reproductions of cask-conditioned traditional English styles of ale. Varieties available any given day will vary as they rotate taps, but Freewheel brews a full range of mild, bitters, ESB, pale ale and IPA, cider, stout, porter...
Cask ale is more like the beer your ancestors drank. It needs to be consumed fresh, and isn't shippable or shelf-stable. This makes it inherently local. It essentially disappeared for many decades in the US and has come back as a niche offering. The rise of brewpubs has reintroduced cask ale to more people, but the refreshing and lower-ABV styles like bitters and mild are still a niche within a niche, and make Freewheel even more of a gem, especially in northern California where the regional style we're famous for (and which is ubiquitous) is a take on IPA which is typically high ABV, hoppy, bitter, and fizzy.
If you love cask conditioned ale and/or drinkable English styles already, you know they're worth going out of your way for. If these things are new to you, give them a try here.
The food is typical pub fare and pairs great with the beers. Fish and chips are the highlight.
At time of writing, covid-19 means there's no inside seating. Options are patio or takeout (yes, beer is available to-go). They're running a very efficient operation right now: my food was ready when they estimated, down...
