I was next door on Saturday, March 6 to visit the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and decided to try Tacos El Rey for the first time as a late lunch/early dinner. (It was 4:15 pm.) I had my daughter and husband look at the menu online and went inside to order. There was one other person waiting in the restaurant on a chair directly in front of the cashier with his mask pulled down under his nose. People like him upset me for obvious reasons; additionally, my son is a doctor on the East Coast and has had to care for Covid patients for the past year in addition to getting the virus himself. I realize, however, that employees have had a rough time with making people comply and I feel for them having to be police officers in addition to food service workers. So, I just stayed as far away from the other customer as possible. I went up to the counter to order and immediately realized that the cashier was not a happy-go-lucky welcoming greeter of customers. No hello and no smile. I thought to myself that perhaps she was just having a bad day. We all never know what's going on in other's lives. She seemed irritated that I was bothering her with my order even though she was clearly not busy. I asked a question about one of the menu items - she impatiently waved to the board above her head as in "figure it out yourself." I asked to leave onions off of another item because my husband has stomach issues, and asked if red sauce or green sauce was hotter because I couldn't remember. By this question she was really impatient even though no customer was behind me, the telephones weren't ringing, and there were several people working in the kitchen who seemingly didn't need her help. In an annoyed tone she said, "I don't know. They don't have spices in them. They're the same. I don't know." Another employee happened to walk up to the register, and the two spoke in Spanish about my obnoxious sauce question, because the new employee looked at me with a "we-really-don't-need-your-business look and also said in a rude tone "I don't know." So I just guessed because by this point I felt confused, rushed and just bad in general. I wish now that I had just turned around and left, which I would have done had I not been getting food for other people in my family. I paid for the order and left a tip because I know this past year has been challenging for restaurant employees, and that tip would be shared with other people in the restaurant whom I had not yet met who hopefully have better attitudes. There was no thank you of any kind for my order. Just a general eff off look. While waiting for my food in my car, I noticed that every item on my order was more expensive than what was listed on their online menu on their website. I had added shrimp to my taco salad instead of beef, but I was charged extra for meat plus extra again for shrimp for a total of $10.49. The price on their online menu is $6.49 for a plain salad and $7.49 con carne. My price was $8.49 con carne plus another $2.00 for shrimp, which honestly I would not have minded had my shrimp not been overcooked and rubbery. The combo wet burrito is listed for $8.99 on the menu; I was charged $9.99. The rest of the items were also more than what is on their online menu. I certainly wasn't going to complain about any of this because I really just wanted to get my food and leave. The woman who handed me the food from the kitchen was thankfully not impolite. She wasn't overly friendly but definitely not like the other two. How was the food itself? It was average. Not great and...
Read moreWe HAD been coming here 4 over 14 + years. Unfortunately for Tacos El Rey they will never have our business again. Such a disappointment they have terrible customer service skills and do not use high quality foods . My family is highly allergic to avocado and this is not the first time Tacos El Rey made our family sick. This happened again and we were unable to eat our dinner b/c the cook and front didn't communicate + thus did not leave the avocado off. This will be our last time you make mi familia sick! I suggest to you not to ever go here because you can't trust a shady business. Claudia stated that I could come back tomorrow bc we live 45 minutes from restaurant to refund. I came back the next day. The rude girl only gave me 17$ in cash back and not what we discussed last night. Claudia stated she would fix the entire situation. She also pushed the 30% tip button and tipped HERSELF $7!! 30% TIP 2 PEOPLE THAT POISON MY FAMILY. I don't think so. Today the chica working the counter didn't respect us at all and was rude. Period point blank, we were stolen from for the last time from Tacos El Rey! We were STOLEN from a very dangerous and bad...
Read moreTacos El Rey is in my top three for Mexican food in Reno. It hits all the right notes for me to land its spot there including portion size, salsa, and horchata.
My usual is their Taco, Sope, and Enchilada plate. All three are well made in my opinion and their fantastic salsa brings the whole thing together. This plate comes with rice and beans so I never leave hungry.
Horchata is a very personal decision for each person. Each establishment has a unique character but I find that Taco El Rey gets it right for my taste.
The restaurant itself has a comfortable feel. You will find regulars of all nationalities enjoying their lunch break or a dinner together at any given meal time. I've also always had friendly interactions with the staff. All of these factors combine to make for one of my most regular lunch...
