Cadao is the term for a cultural Vietnamese folk singing style. It is very unique and is commonly heard sung by within countryside. This is such a strong name for a restaurant, as opposed to most copy and paste vietnamese restaurants with "name" followed by three digits. The place also has a lot of high praise so I came with high expectations. Normally when coming with high expectations, I typicaly leave dissapointed, and I was worried this could also be the case. Upon arriving I was pleasantly surprised to see that the appearance was very typical of a store you would find in the cities of Vietname, both internally and externally. I ordered the Bun Rieu. It is a vermicelli noodle soup with a savory tomato base with a hint of seafood with chunks of boiled tomato, fried tofu, and balls of crab patty. The bowl came out hot and stayed hot and I was very happy with how it tasted. It tasted just like my mom's Bun Rieu, which I haven't eaten in years, due to moving away from home and very few restaurants offering it. I am excited to come back and try their Bun Bo Hue, which is a dish my mom also commonly made, as well as their Pho which I hear a lot about. I recommend this place if you're looking for authentic Vietnamese flavors. Just keep in mind that this place is a small locally owned place with few workers.

Probably one of my favorite Vietnamese food places within the Twin Cities area, if not my favorite, and the entire vibe, which is definitely hole in the wall, allows one to know that their food has got to be good. While I have only ordered a few items from them so far, I have found them all to be great and worth a try for sure. Everything ranging from the spring rolls, which had an abundant amount of items including pork and shrimp, to the bun bo hue had been authentically on point. The bun bo hue was probably the spiciest one I have had anywhere, and it contained a good amount of flavor. I was given a lot of meat of various types in it, including the kinds of pork that I didn't eat. I still appreciated the courtesy, though, despite not eating it. The pho wasn't in a large bowl, but the bowl itself was filled with all kinds of ingredients from meat to noodles, and of course, had broth that contained an abundant amount of flavor. Towards the end, I was also given free Ferrero Rochers, which I also appreciated. I have been here several times and the chocolate wasn't a guarantee every time, so just a heads up there, but it's okay since I wasn't expecting them to begin with. Apparently they had a lot of Chinese food options as well, which I would love to try upon my return here!

Pho was great. What I didn't like was when we were ordering, we wanted to order fried rice with the pho but the person said you should wait until you finish your pho first to see if I'm full first. Very persistent when I tried again. Gave me a very bad experience. Are they being cheap? Lazy to cook? No ingredients? Pho is so expensive now or is it just this place? Paid like $15.75 for the special. it came in one size which felt more like a regular to a small. Didn't get a lot of add ons like bean sprouts, mints, etc for two of us. A very small space. Literally fits like less than 7 people, less if you're bigger. Would not come again.

Cadao is a great go-to for a quick Pho fix. They do have a full Chinese-American menu as well. While most of the dishes are done quite well and are a bit better than most other options in the area, it's still your run of the mill Chinese-American food. And as other reviewers have mentioned, the portions definitely do not support the prices for this part of the menu.

The Pho however is why we continue to frequent Cadao. The broth is fantastic - savory and just slightly sweet at the same time. The Pho meat portions are also generous. When you get Pho to go, you receive all of the fixings - basil, hoisin and sriracha (mixed together), onions, vermicelli noodles, and jalapeno slices. You receive a container for the fixings and a large soup container. All containers are styrofoam.

There are some appetizers worth considering. The spring rolls are tightly packed, large, and easy to eat. The come packed with shrimp, lettuce, vermicelli noodles, mint, possibly basil, carrot, and what I'm pretty sure are very thin slices of roast pork. Instead of the usual chili sauce, a peanut sauce is served along with these rolls, which was tasty. The egg rolls are also decent. I have also tried the chicken wings, (I believe they were the oyster wings). They were quite large - very meaty and spicy. I tried the cream cheese wontons, which are served as triangular folds, once. They were not my favorite as they seemed more chewy than crispy and slightly more oily than most I've had.

I would certainly recommend Cadao for Pho. If you do choose to try the other menu items, know that you will probably get some pretty decent quality food but likely a smaller portion for a slightly larger price than what you may be used to with other Chinese-American...
