I enjoyed the food overall.
The good: Fried whiting - the fish were very good and very plentiful; it appears that they give you both halves of a whole fish. Usually when you order five fish filets, you basically get five halves of fish; but Sugar's Crab Shack gives you both halves of a whole fish so you really get 10 filets in an order of five fish. That was great!
Coleslaw - I really enjoyed the slaw; it had a sweetness to it that I don't usually get in coleslaws.
Deviled crab - this was my favorite dish; I definitely recommend trying it; you get two deviled crabs in an order.
Fries - the fries were really good and hot. I nibbled a few on my way home and couldn't stop. I'm glad I did, though, because the steam in the box made them a little wilted by the time I got home. This isn't the restaurant's fault...it's just science. I should have kept the box cracked open so the steam could escape.
Sweet potato pie - this was pretty good; I really liked the flavor; they give you a whole little pie (about a five or six inches), it's not just a slice.
The not-so-bad, but not-so-good: Popcorn shrimp - I didn't really enjoy these that much; they're edible, but not great. The breading was gritty and they were a bit hard from being over-fried. They appear to be frozen, packaged shrimp that they just throw into the fryer from the bag.
Lemon pie - This was a lemon chess pie; it was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. It was a little lemon-y for me, but if you really like Lemon Chess, you'll probably like it. This was also a whole little (five or six inches) pie, not just a slice.
Overall: I enjoyed the food. They didn't have two of the things I wanted to order - coconut cream pie and crab soup. I was a little disappointed in that, but I guess those are so popular, they just ran out of them. It also looks like they have a little taco stand out front (where I assume they sell fish tacos), but it was closed when I visited.
They cook the food to order, so you'll have to do a little bit of waiting to get your food after you order. The prices were definitely reasonable, so I didn't mind waiting.
This location has covered, outdoor seating available if you want to stay and eat, but everyone I saw did carry-out orders. The parking was a challenge because the lot is a little small for the number of people that were there. It's just a very busy place. I had to drive around the lot twice to finally get a spot.
Finally, I would absolutely recommend this restaurant. The food was good, the prices were right, the staff was friendly, and the wait wasn't bad. I will be returning...
Read moreSugar's Crab Shack was good but, I had a great experience on my visit. I was on the phone when I pulled into the parking lot and told my cousin to let me go and get my food before the line started. This was around 3:15 p.m. there was only one person at the window and I guess this lady had just ordered her food and walk towards me to say order what you want I'm going to pay for your food. I had her to repeat cuz I was shocked. 😳She said I want to pay for your meal, order what you want and my silly self said why? I've seen this happen on YouTube and say to myself why would you ask why if somebody is trying to bless you and I did the same thing. I said are you sure? She said yes I want to bless somebody else. I kind of felt like I was blocking her blessing because I was hesitant but appreciative. Last week I saw on YouTube where this guy comes into Walmart or Target and walks up to a customer and says I want to pay for your items. I thought to myself I wish I could run into someone like that. And it happened. I was going to purchase dinner for my friend whose birthday was Tuesday and pick me up something light so my bill came to $52 and change. The lady picked up her food and came back to the window while I was ordering and told the order taker that she was paying for my meal. It put tears to my eyes and joy. It was a blessing. 🙏🏽Speak it into existence. Now, my food was good but I got the catfish special and it wasn't as dry after frying as usual. I don't know how to explain it but eating the fish was a little wet but crispy outside coating like maybe it wasn't cooked well all the way through. I don't know if it was Steam or what? I think that they have had some of the best slaw and tartar sauce which seem to be prepared by them. This time my tartar sauce did not taste fresh and my slaw texture was more coarse than shredded. I love this place and hope that they will see the value in fresh preparations. The whole slaw and tartar sauce was amazing. It scares me when changes start to be made in the food taste and preparation I enjoy sugars, I hope they put back the tender loving care for my...

Our team was excited to support a local black business for lunch on Blackout Economics Day, but these types of experiences create barriers! I was so disgusted with my experience I gave my food away. While the fish has always been amazing at this establishment, I do not plan to return.
When I ordered two of the same items in two different transactions, I was advised that the POS could not process a duplicate sale amount and I would have to add an item.
I inquired about desserts, but none were available. Salmon cake, only available as a sandwich or dinner. I decided on a crab cake, not listed on the menu board (to my knowledge). One crab cake is 138.86% more than the accompanying entree. 🫨
There are layers of things wrong with my customer experience:
Consider a new POS for people with multiple orders that can accommodate any/all sales. That's a merchant problem, it should not be a customer problem.
Sales associate could have suggested (upsell) options that accompany well with order, e.g., offer to upsell fries when you require me to "add" an item to my order
While I understand increased cost, the quality may be good, but that does not quantify the retail price, $18.99 for a single crab cake.
After inquiring about the crab cake price, I was advised by the order expeditor I should have brought a dinner for $36. When I pay $36 for dinner, there is a table setting and server.
When I inquired about fries, I was told I should have ordered a different item, which was an additional $3.86, which is reasonable. My mistake. However, seeing my discord concerning the price of the crabs cake, I expected a complimentary order of fries. Nope! I went back to my vehicle to get more funds, $4.54, because I wanted my team member to have what...
