I was excited to visit Taco Vegana after hearing so many positive reviews from the community, but it sadly fell short of expectations.
Pros: • 100% vegan restaurant with GF options!!! 🌱 • The cashew-based queso blanco was flavorful, creamy, and melted to perfection • The mole sauce was rich and authentic • Tables were well-spaced given the tight quarters (bar seating available) • The berry mocktail was delightfully refreshing
Cons: • Tortilla chips were stale - hardly any crunch • Aside from dessert, our food was served lukewarm • The veggie tacos were incredibly bland and did not seem fresh (tasted like unseasoned canned corn/veggies), and the side of rice and beans were also flavorless • We overheard the bar staff saying that our waiter forgot to send our order through to the kitchen, so we ended up waiting an extended period of time for our food. They did apologize for the delay at the end of our meal, after we paid our bill, but didn’t offer an explanation or acknowledge the mishap.
In closing, my family is rooting for Taco Vegana’s success and hope that they can make small improvements to their recipes/service based on this feedback. We LOVE seeing more vegan options pop up throughout RVA and always want to show...
Read moreWe recently ate here after hearing about them at the Veg Fest and were excited because I have AGS (alpha gal syndrome) and am allergic to all red meat and dairy. However, we were extremely disappointed as much of the food severely lacked flavor and seasoning. Specifically, the beans tasted like they came straight out of the can and the Spanish rice was complete mush as it had been over cooked. We ordered their street taco combo and the Richmond burrito, all of the protein in these were delicious however it all came out cold with the exception of one fried street taco. I have a feeling this was due to a lack of forethought on the kitchen staff and maybe a lack of heat lamps. When we notified our server, she contacted the manager (Alexis) who apologized and offered to comp half our meal which was more than gracious. We hope that the feedback we left while we were there and in this review will be helpful because we really want this place to do well! After our experience today, we think we may try to get takeout from them to see if things have improved or just opt to make our vegan...
Read moreThe bar at taco vegana is great and has an okay selection of draft beers, but I wish they had a Mexican beer on draft as well. Food was lackluster and not incredibly authentic in taste or filling options. Instead of embracing traditional ingredients like nopal, poblano, or beans, they substituted with a lot of soy products. The tortillas were barely toasted, and as a result, the filling ended up breaking through the double layer of corn. This really shouldn't be happening, especially if the cooks know what they're doing. I didn't see the owners, or any other Hispanic staff there, so I thought it was a red flag (saying this as a Hispanic person).
I'm really writing this review in hopes that the owners improve the food so that this restaurant stays in Church Hill for years to come. As it stands, the service and bar is great, but the food needs to be fortified with better preparation and...
