I was set to go here with a SC friend and treat her to a belated birthday lunch. After TWO weeks of planning this back and forth through email/text she forgot and was at Renn Fair 🙃🙄 (which had multiple dates by the way.) I was suppose to treat for her birthday. Now that's def being on hold/postponed.
So, I went by myself. The décor is beautiful! Lots of authentic Ethiopian works and a few customers came while I was also there. A cute Asian guy and a White couple, so it brings a pretty diverse customer base!
The food is plentiful and I took home leftovers. I got the Yebeg Alicha and Potato Alicha (side.) It came with 2 extra Injera!
The only things I'd change would be 1) going with someone who wants to go or have fun alone, 2) the music is a mood killer and sappy sad music on repeat, and 3) the mango OJ is bottled and I thought it was house made. Go alone or with a friend, who can go too! Authentic Ethiopian music would have set this restaurant apart. Please alert customers you have bottled drinks. (My hopes were kinda let down more 🙃.)
Parking is okay, wish it was flatter/bigger but at least it's free.
It's gonna be my spot for Ethiopian food now, whether alone or...

Shagga Ethiopian Restaurant in Hyattsville has completely won our hearts (and taste buds)! This is not just our favorite Ethiopian spot — it's our only favorite restaurant, period. We've tried the same dish at several other places, but nothing compares to the authentic flavor, freshness, and love that goes into every bite here.
We always order the Vegetarian Combination, (One plate for 2 person) which comes with 10 delicious dishes beautifully served on top of soft, perfectly injera. Each item has its own unique flavor, yet they all come together in perfect harmony. From spicy lentils to savory greens and hearty stews — everything is cooked to perfection and packed with traditional Ethiopian spices.
The portion is generous, the service is warm and welcoming, and the ambiance is simple but full of soul. If you're looking for real, flavorful Ethiopian cuisine, Shagga is hands-down the place to go!
Highly recommend — 10/10 every single...
Read moreAfter reading the reviews, I visited this restaurant with my family and was greatly disappointed by the food and the service. As we first entered the restaurant, no one seemed to acknowledge our presence or greeted us, nor did they direct us to sit. We had to ask one of the ladies by the bar area, and she informed us to take any seat. Following that, we had to wait roughly 20 minutes before a waitress came and while we were ordering, the waitresses informed us that she needed to leave since her shift was ending. Subsequently, no one returned for another 20 minutes to even bring us water or any drinks, so my husband had to approach the the bar area and asked one of the servers if we could be served with water and he also ordered food. And when the food finally arrived, it was cold and tasteless. And the portion was so small. Overall, the entire experience was incredibly dreadful, and I am genuinely surprised how they could stay in business and how they were able to receive...
