I want to preface this by saying that I love supporting Black-owned businesses. I go out of my way to patronize and promote them because I believe in investing in our community. But as much as I love my people, I also love myself—and that means valuing professionalism, respect, and good customer service. Unfortunately, my experience at this establishment left me feeling disrespected, dismissed, and ultimately unsafe.
I hadn’t been to this juice bar in almost two years, so I was excited to return. Google Maps led me to their old location, which was shut down, but their listing said they were open. I gave them a call and found their new spot. When I arrived, I was looking around and even considered doing a video to showcase how nice the place looked.
But from the moment I started placing my order, the experience took a turn. I simply asked for a burger wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun—something that’s a minor request at most places. Instead of offering a solution, I got back-and-forth responses about how they couldn’t do it, rather than simply saying, “We can make it that way, but we have to charge you the regular price.” That would have been fine! Instead, the conversation dragged on unnecessarily, making me feel like I was asking for something unreasonable.
I decided to keep it simple and ordered a green juice and a sausage dog—with no mustard (because I hate mustard). As I waited, a guy came from the kitchen and asked if I had ordered a drink. Before I could answer, the cashier spoke for me. I jokingly said, “Well, I did order a green juice—isn’t that still a drink?” Then, out of nowhere, the guy flicked me off and made a dismissive comment like, “I’m not going there with you, lady.”
At first, I was confused—where did that energy even come from? I brushed it off, but I was paying attention.
A white woman in the shop got her food while I waited, and I noticed something small but telling. They handed her food with a napkin and a pleasant “Have a nice day.” Now, you might think that’s nothing, but as a person who observes body language and customer interactions, I notice things.
After nearly 20 minutes, they finally brought me my simple order. No “Thank you,” no “Have a good day,” nothing. Just handed it off like it was an inconvenience. I got to my car, checked my food, and sure enough—it had mustard on it.
So I went back inside, politely pointed it out, and said, “This has mustard, and I specifically asked for none.” I also mentioned that my overall experience had been disappointing. The energy shifted immediately. The guy who gave me the food looked irritated, like I was a problem just for pointing out their mistake.
Then, instead of handling it professionally, another man got defensive—his body language changed like he was ready to come out of his seat at me. He started saying, “Oh, you don’t know me, lady! You don’t know me!”—escalating the situation over a simple request.
Here I was, a Black woman, standing alone in a Black-owned business, facing a Black man who was acting hostile towards me for absolutely no reason. And the two other men standing there? They said nothing. No “Hey man, calm down,” no stepping in to de-escalate—just standing there.
At that moment, I knew I would never return.
I wasn’t going to write this review, but I felt I needed to. Because the reality is this: We want to support Black businesses. We want to see them thrive. But that does not mean we should tolerate poor customer service, dismissive attitudes, or aggressive behavior—especially towards Black women.
I will not support a business where I feel unwelcome or unsafe. Period.
If you choose to go, just be mindful of the energy in the room. Because professionalism matters. Respect matters. And how you treat your own people says everything about your business.
And for the owners: If this is how your employees interact with customers, especially Black women who want to support you, then it’s only a matter of time before word gets out. A good product is not enough—your service is what determines whether...
