My wife went to the sushi House in August on our vacation. I habitually try to use Connecticut magazine for restaurant reviews and suggestions. This restaurant was one listed under their best restaurants for sushi for 2020. The place had people waiting outside which is always a good sign. I do not mind waiting for any restaurant that has a faithful following because that is always a good indicator. The food I would have to give a two out of five. I ordered sushi and it was kind of warm and I found it unimpressive. Maybe we're just spoiled by our favorite sushi restaurant in East Windsor but I didn't like this restaurant sushi at all. Then the service I would have to give a two out of five as well. it was challenging to hear our waitress and I won't Mark any restaurant down for the fact that there is a language barrier and as there was in our case this visit. But our biggest issue was that the menu which was modified for covid-19 was very confusing. Nobody gave us any instructions and when we tried to order they were going to give us all we can eat specials for like $25 per person which was not what we wanted. when we were finally able to make sense of the menus we tried to order and then additionally found that there was things on the order form we were provided that didn't match up with the menu we were given. So things in the menu we could not even order at the time period. the worst part of the evening was when I ordered hot tea for my wife and I when my wife was away at the restroom. The tea came to our table and something was floating at the bottom of my cup. I'm kind of a clean freak so I told the waitress about it expecting to get a new cup of tea. She looked at me and said well that's just a tea leaf and then paused. I realized to her that if it was a tea leaf that there's no issue and I should just drink it but to me I was grossed out and something should have been done. I left it alone but that did not help the experience. I did not find them to be overly clean either. I'm going to have to say two out of five. We were given paper menus but they did provide us a laminated menu too which I don't remember being very clean and the bathrooms when I later used the restroom was not clean either. I followed by the rule that if the bathroom which customers can see is not clean then what would the kitchen look like which customers cannot see. And the atmosphere I'd give that a three out of five stars. Wasn't anything impressive it's about an average. this restaurant seems to be loved by a lot of locals in Rocky Hill but in my book it is not worth the time and frankly I am disappointed in Connecticut magazine. This restaurant would be a solid two out...
Read moreSushi House is the best option for All You Can Eat (AYCE) sushi in the Hartford area. The sushi is decent and the varieties are extensive, and include sashimi, nigiri, maki rolls and special rolls. There is also a vast assortment of kitchen appetizers included with AYCE. Ordering is done via paper menu. There are separate menus for Kitchen items and Sushi Bar items. You check off the items that you want and how many of each. You can order multiple times (dunno the max as always full after ordering second time). There are a lot of different items on the Kitchen menu including: Salad (Seaweed, Kani, House) - Soup (Miso, Chicken, Mushroom) - Tempura (Shrimp and assorted Vegetables) - Teriyaki (Chicken, Fish, Tofu) - Along with many other items. Sushi menu also includes a ton of different options. Standard favorites like salmon, tuna, white tuna, and shrimp are all offered as well as items like squid, mackerel, and egg. Sashimi and nigiri are all available for most fish options. Maki roll options are plentiful including California rolls and Spicy Tuna rolls. There is also an extensive list of Special Rolls including Spider rolls and Shrimp Tempura rolls. Kitchen items always come out first while Sushi is being made. They are served relatively quickly especially the salad items and soup which is great when you are hungry and will tide you over until sushi is ready. Most items are ok, nothing really outstanding but nothing terrible. Same goes for sushi. Items are fresh and quality is decent. It's not the best sushi I've ever had but it's good for what it is which is AYCE. It's definitely better then you would get at a Chinese buffet or Supermarket. Dessert options include fruit, Fried Oreos, and Ice Cream (chocolate, vanilla, green tea and red bean). Service has always been good every time I've gone to Sushi House. Dishes are cleared quickly and they check in often to see if you want to reorder anything. I never felt the wait for the sushi to be prepared was outrageous no matter how busy they are. Truthfully I preferred Asahi up the street over Sushi House and it's too bad they closed. As such, the past few times there has always been a wait, usually about 20-30 minutes. All in all when I get a hankering for sushi, I make my way to...
Read moreThis is my first negative review ever. My dining experience today was very bad. The sushi quality is adequate; and that's the only acceptable part of lunch at The Sushi House. I dined with a friend and we were given one order sheet for both of us. I asked for a second as our orders were different and only one made it awkward. The waitress actually objected and I told her bring it anyway please. She did. The "hot" tea was luke warm and served in a chintzy plastic mug. I guess leaving a hot pot of tea (as do all the other buffets) was not their policy. No extra napkins were given, so I had to hijack them from another table. The service generally was inattentive and a bit snotty. Not enough wasabi and ginger were brought out, even after it was requested. There were exactly 6 patrons in the restaurant; the staff had two cooks, 3 waitresses and a manager. One might think that this ratio would ensure decent service. So far, it is a 3 star experience. My friend orders a soft shell crab without rice. The roll comes with rice and he eats the fish but not the rice. The manager actually comes over and admonishes him for wasting food! We explained that we ordered the item without rice. He said this is the way it is made. After I pointed out that the waitress should have said so, he still continued on about wasting food. I replied "no". He still argued! After 3 more exchanges like this he finally returned to his podium after hearing "no" 3 more times. Unbelievable. I understand the point of not wasting food at a buffet, but we are talking about fifty cents of rice here. The low level of service and obvious rude behavior deserves 1/2 star rating. One final faux pas: after the check is paid, the table cleared, the last item arrives late, The waitress takes a new set of chopsticks from the same table I had to hijack the napkin! She places them on the table's edge as she is facing another direction and nearly drops them. I have worked and managed restaurants for over 25 years. Believe me, these folks are in the...
