I never leave negative comments concerning a restaurant nor dining experience. However, I felt it very important to share my experience on last evening. Upon arrival we were greeted and seated very rapidly, which I was impressed with for Saturday night.
I was with my 16-year-old exchange student and I am a 47-year-old woman. Initially, the server kept refusing to speak to me. She kept addressing my exchange student who could not understand the questions she was asking. So I would respond on her behalf. My student simply would look at me, shake her head, and point her head in my direction. The server still refused to speak directly with me, even though I continued responding on her behalf.
Finally, I simply asked. Can you just speak to me? She does not understand everything that you're asking .
We ordered the lobster rangoons as an appetizer, and then two entrées, ( The mac & cheese with chicken and bacon & the pot roast with all the trimmings.)
Prior to ordering, I asked the server what were her top selling Items? Her response was sandwiches burgers and pizzas. There were over eight items listed in each category, and so specifics would've been a great help to understand what would be best for first timers, on the menu.
For the most part, most of the reviews were great so we just tried anything on the menu. The food came out rapidly and we were impressed with this. When I received the pot roast dinner that I purchased, everything looked normal . However, underneath the gravy, was a plate full of the fat that was un trimmed from the roast. I tried to overlook this and maybe even eat around it, but I had a plate full of beef fat. So I didn't eat at all after the first bite.
Thereafter, at the end of the dining experience, I had not eaten any of my entree. The server asked if I wanted to carry out , clearly I responded "no" because I did not want to complain. Again, the server came around and asked how the bill was going to be paid ? She went back to addressing my exchange student and not speaking with me again. This was the most bizarre thing I could've ever experienced. I just was not understanding where the communication gap was. You can see that she and I are speaking only in another language and I am translating. What is the real issue ?
After asking for my entree of $21 that I did not eat, to be removed from the final bill, the manager came out to assist. He was very friendly and helpful and removed the food that I did not eat from my bill.
I paid and STILL INCLUDER GRATUITY , as an act of kindness. But, vowed to myself that I would never return to this establishment again because I have never felt so degraded nor humiliated in my life.
It's important to give important feedback in this type of work as this is what I do for a living. In this manner, the staff and ownership so can know that everyone's experience is not perfect or that there is room for improvement.
I'm assured that everyone's experience can be adjusted , if a reasonable accommodation...
Read moreI hardly ever leave negative feedback... Been here often and also the Deck - the sister restaurant on the beach. Love the food. Creative and really good. But the staff always leaves me feeling i have imposed on them. Last night a food runner in a cap seemed to want to start a fight w someone - before we even spoke to her. She just put the starter fries down w a glare and when I did remind her that we had asked for some ranch on the side, she put her hands on her hips and kinda snarky like said "and how many did you want"? Not like, "Sorry that got forgotten, how many do you need?" More like, " go ahead, make my day! Just tell me how many you want." I know it's a tough job, so I asked our main server to find her and ask her to come to the table so I could appologize if my request seemed demanding somehow or offensive to her, and the server couldnt be bothered either. She told us she had worked there 4½ years and knew our son who had also worked at the Deck, but she couldn't even be bothered to be friendly for a minute. No, it wasn't because they were swamped at all. Just an aloof attitude. This kind of attitude seems to be pervasive in some businesses and it usually starts at the top. A friendly manager or owner who gets a true caring customer service experience will spread that genuine attitude down through the ranks or will thin out those who can't work that way. And a bad day is acceptable once in a while, but I specifically sent a tip to the server in a cap to try to cheer her up a bit. She walked by w a glare a bit later and not once acknowledged us again and obviously had never intended to get us what we asked for. My wife was amused i had put so much effort into this situation, but I was thinking that i wanted to be real sure I was understanding the situation correctly, no mistake. There's enough trouble in the world, and If I'm never going back - and that means missing out on the best fries in Muskegon, I don't want to wonder if I was misunderstanding the situation. I also don't want to wonder if a snotty server is doing something to my food next time. Like I said, they know who we are. Btw, I always treat servers w respect and tip well - 20-25% So, I guess I have my answer and will just stay clear. I had already decided to stay clear of the deck because of how a group of our friends, my wife and I had been treated on two occasions before, but I chalked that up to being a very busy and crazy scene at the beach. But it seems to be company wide - like its a money machine for the owners, and the customer is a hassle that has to be put up with to keep that...
Read moreThe atmosphere here is taking an old building and adding a modern feel to it. The whitewashed bricks and wood accents make a warm and welcoming feeling.
I ordered the Lobster Rangoons ($14), which have a mango hot sauce, mango-pineapple slaw. These were very tasty take on a Rangoon. I also ordered the Grandma's Pot Roast ($21). This has beef gravy, garlic yukon gold mashed potato, candied carrot, and sweet cornbread. I very much enjoyed the pot roast. It was very tender and tasty. The mashed potatoes were top notch and I normally don't like carrots, but these were good. The one negative was the cornbread. It was dry and just not tasty, they need to go back to the drawing board and try another recipe. One if the people I was with ordered the Carolina Pulled Pork sandwich ($14). This normally has smoked pulled pork, creamy dill coleslaw, pimento cheese spread, haystack onion, BBQ, on a brioche bun. However my sister just wanted it plain with only the bbq sauce. She stated it was a little dry, but with the Bbq sauce was good. She had also asked that her fries come out hit and fresh. They were only lukewarm, however she asked for fresh fries and they did bring some. The other person I was with ordered the Traditional Burger ($13). This is a 1/2lb all beef patty served with lettuce, tomato, onion, house kettle chips & pints’ onion dip. This was cooked perfectly to a Medium Rare and was stated to be excellent.
The service was friendly. He brought me refills for my drink and fixed my sisters fries issue. My only slight complaint is they don't give a paper bill. They just hold their machine and show you your total. I don't like that.
Overall a 4 1/2 star review. Since I need to round I'll round up, because I feel it deserves a 5 more than a 4. Would I return? Absolutely, if I lived in Muskegon it would be a once a month...
