Where to begin?
Like some places that have a cult following . . as suspected for a very long time, the HYPE and legend is far larger than reality. Although the brainwashing and money spent on advertising works very well to a degree on some diehard followers, lemming legions will follow . . the truth is far less romantic.
I took a whole track team to the In-N-Out in Roseburg Oregon last night. I have to be totally fair here . . the atmosphere, cleanliness, professionalism and service of the employees, all AAA+ . . SERIOUSLY. Very impressed. 100% old school on the look, clean, feel and service and we got served reasonably fast, considering the size of our group.
NOW . . about the food. I'd never really been very interested in going to In-N-Out Burger because of the ridiculous long lines of cars, 2 - 3 wide and I figured that there's no way that any drive thru burger place could be worth the wait and hassle. Well . . since the track team chose this restaurant to eat at . . I thought I'd give it an objective try.
Unfortunately . . was I not only correct in my estimation of brainwashed legions buying into the hype . . it was even worse than I had imagined. I didn't think a significant percentage of our population could be this gullible. If your a walk in customer, I could kind of forgive you for being taken in a bit by the charm of the interior and service . . but purely based on the food which isn't even as good as McDonald's (which is a pretty low bar) . . I really don't get all the long lines, die hard fans and hype. Are there really that many people with such poor taste?!?!?
The burger: Bland, less than average, a bit overly salty and the only thing noticably good about it . . the toasted bun.
The fries: Possibly the worst I've ever had. A truly bizarre, crunchy cardboard texture . . as if reconstituted potato starch was reformed into french fry shapes, then fried and served as real "fries". Truly weird. They were that bad.
This is one of the strangest fast food experiences that I have ever had. If they put as much love into the food as they do the atmosphere and professional employee training . . I could maybe see some hype . . but sorry . . I was very disappointed by the poor quality of the food . . which should be top of the list...
Read moreI had been looking forward to going here for a while, and a friend I hadn't seen in years visited, so we went there. I hoped for more, that's for certain. We both ordered a cheeseburger, fries, and a drink. The fries looked like they came out of a microwave. They were soggy and limp. Honestly? I should've gotten the trademark Double Double because the meat patty in the sandwich was hardly satisfying, and appeared to be so thinly smashed that it was about 1/8" in height. My friend didn't even finish his burger. Why bother? The sandwiches were mostly lettuce. Next time I'll have to go the traditional route and get the Double Double. Maybe it was my fault for choosing the lousy, scrawny, worthless, supplemented-with-lettuce supposed "cheeseburger." But the fries should've been better. I'll have to ask for Animal Fries, so my limp, soggy fries will be covered in a tasty sauce. And that reminds me...they didn't give me any of their signature sauce or ask if I wanted any. I'm a little heartbroken, to be honest, because I've put a little too much esteem behind finally trying In-N-Out. I will say that a different friend brought me a burger from an In-N-Out in Grants Pass, and that was fantastic, even reheated. But that was the Double Double. Don't waste time with the cheeseburger, and Roseburg--please try harder with your fries. Thinking positively, a sweet older lady attentively wiped down our table, and she was adorable. The bun on the burger was really nice and supple. The building is still only several months old, basically new and has palm trees all over it, so that's cool... The service was pretty fast, and the employees were polite. I will return, but the paper-thin patty and the limp, soggy fries didn't ruin the experience for me, but it certainly...
Read moreIdk what it is about In N Out but the other fast food burger places could stand to take notice of how they do business. Every location i have ever been to is clean and bright, from the walls to the dorky unitorms. Speaking of the dorky uniforms, the (usually) kids that wear them are among the most respectful, pleasant and efficient employees I have ever encountered, second only to perhaps Dick's in Seattle. I have never had service from the staff that was anything other than great. And most importantly the food.. This is where they beat all other fast food places, even Dick's. Everyone knows that there is nothing to beat that's harder than Dick's! Not even Five Guys beat Dick's. I keep contrasting the two (Dick's and In N Out) because so many people see it as an unspoken competition. There was a time not too long ago when In N Out was strictly a California chain. Back then it became tradition for some Washingtonian High School Seniors to make a pilgramige to California just to go to In N Out, buy some food and a T-shirt and drive back in one night. Conversely, many Californian people I have met had similar experiences with Dick's. There is nothing better than a bag of Dick's, dude. There is something about it... BUT for In N Out ! The quality is higher, and even the presentation of the food is not even on the same playing field. I admit I even like that they maintain their "secret" menu that everyone knows about even if it is a corny gimmick. So yeah. This particular In N Out even stood out as exceptional among their...
