Native San Franciscan and decades of enjoying upscale quality dining and culturally diverse restaurants, now living in Roseville where fast food level eateries are prolific. Even if this restaurant is a national chain, but it excels in serving the closest to authentic Mediterranean style Greek food. What used to be the food mecca outside of Los Angeles, even in San Francisco Bay Area, gyro wraps are Americanized to pander to uneducated, culinary unworldly palates, not unlike why most mid to budget Chinese restaurants sabotage their cultural integrity to appease stereotypical American mainstream tastes.
The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill's litmus authenticity is that it also serves all lamb gyros, kabobs and complete meal plates. Everywhere else, combine beef with lamb, and still others add french fries to cut back on the meat inside the gyro wrap. The sliced lamb is tender and juicy. Plan on using lots of napkins as their meats are tender, moist and juicy. Also, not found anywhere else within at least three hundred miles in my eating excursions, is a creamy, rich baklava ice cream with subtle crunch of almonds and baklava crisp pieces with gentle streams of real honey. This restaurant/cafe also makes baklava and other desserts in-house. Most other places outsource almost everything.
Usually, I will try most restaurants first before rendering an opinion, but rarely or never return if the food and service is ordinary and forgettable or just mimicking what is clearly not authentic. But I definitely intend to go back and try other choices. Place is very clean, friendly service and prices are justifiable as most portions are generous.
For culturally diverse foodies and gourmands, especially those of us who have travelled sparing no expense abroad for cuisines typical of foreign country visited, this place is the closest to Greek/Mediterranean food experiebce outside of major cosmopolitan cities and upper middle class suburbs. If you prefer Americanized version, go to the other one east of Roseville - now that is definitely fast food...
Read moreMy husband and I visited this place around 3:30 PM on Sunday. The restaurant was empty, so we were happy that we would be able to get our food quickly. We both ordered the SOUVLAKI PLATE – my husband had lamb with rice, and I had french fries with shrimp. For two portions of food, side salads, and two drinks, we paid a total of $62, including tax, which seemed a bit high for this place. We waited about 15 minutes for our food in the empty restaurant. When the food arrived, I picked up one of the two skewers with shrimp and noticed that the shrimps on the other skewer were clearly overcooked. They had tried to hide the burnt shrimp under the good ones. I returned the burnt shrimp to the girl who had taken our order earlier, explained the situation, and her response was, “I think it’s just a burnt tail, but okay, we’ll replace it.” This reaction surprised me a little, as it seemed like they were trying to deceive me twice. The new skewer of shrimp took as long to prepare as the original two full orders (again, the restaurant was empty), so by the time I finally got it, I had already eaten almost my entire portion. My fries and my husband’s rice were just okay, but his lamb was bland, and my shrimp was too salty.
Overall, our impressions of this place are quite mixed, but in the end, we both agreed that we won’t...
Read moreI had a fantastic dining experience at The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill. We started with the Hummus Appetizer, and I really enjoyed the warm hummus. It was smooth and flavorful, served with soft pita bread, and the temperature gave it a nice, comforting feel.
For our main courses, we had the Classic Greek Salad with Gyro meat and the Great Greek Rice Bowl with Falafel. The salad was incredibly generous—definitely more than I could eat by myself—and the gyro meat was perfectly seasoned and tender. While I did feel spinach was missing, the freshness and quality of the ingredients made up for it, and it was still an excellent dish. The rice bowl was equally impressive, with crispy falafel, fluffy rice, and vibrant vegetables all coming together beautifully.
What really stood out, though, was the exceptional customer service. Russell, the manager, went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. His attentiveness and friendliness made us feel right at home, and it was clear that he truly cares about the customer experience.
Overall, everything from the food to the service was top-notch. I highly recommend The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill for anyone looking for a delicious meal and a...
