Sweet Avenue Bake Shop — Restaurant in Rutherford

I wanted to do something special for a friend who was having a bit of a get together at a bar. Cupcakes were the ideal choice. My cousin suggested Sweet Avenue as it was closer than anywhere else and when I found out they had gluten it was a done deal!

It was late in the day - so the selection was limited. I fretted about the fact the cupcakes were solely vegan but the young girl behind the counter assured me they wouldn't disappoint. I bought a selection of cupcakes and a fair amount of cake truffles for any of the bar patrons who want to join in.

Judging from the reaction and the requests for more, I would say the cupcakes were a success. My gluten free cupcake was not quite what I had expected, but then again I have never had a cupcake since being diagnosed with celiac 18 months ago... oh, not to say it wasn't good... heck, if my weight permitted it, I'd head to the bakery right now and buy a few more for myself.

Just a note: these are vegan cupcakes: a specialty item. If you want more affordable cupcakes, perhaps you might try the bakery at Costco or your local supermarket. I saw no issue with their prices - the counter help was smiling and friendly and the quality was superb. My one complaint was the lack of additional decoration options. Then again, one quick trip to Michael's solved...

I just had an awful experience at this bakery . I come in here often for my mother who is a vegan . I picked up four cupcakes yesterday afternoon . i opened up the box this morning to give my mom for her birthday . i was going to have them on a plate waiting for her when she came over this morning .I opened up a box to 4 smashed cupcakes . I went back to the bakery and showed them the cupcakes and asked for them to be replaced or for a refund . The employees said there was no way that they could have smashed on their own . They then got the owner out of the back . She said there was nothing she could do for me ! she accused me of dropping the cupcakes . This is horrible customer service ! She should have replaced the cupcakes . I said I was not going to leave the store until my cupcakes were replaced . The owner had the nerve to call the police on me !! She reported me as an irate customer . I could not believe this. all I wanted was my cupcakes replaced that I spent $16 on ! the police office even could not believe they did not just replace these cupcakes . The staff was extremely rude and...

I had a similar experience as well. Ordered a cake and was not aware that payment is due BEFORE pick up. I just got an email that it was canceled. Thank God for Walmart and I saved $40 for the same cake I would have gotten from them. Cookies are great though and cake, I agree has way too much icing and the cake itself is kinda dry. I bake vegan cakes all the time and mine is never dry like that. Guess I will keep baking for myself.

5/11/19 UPDATE: I really want to love this bakery because it's so close to home but yesterday, I have to say, there is no real "taste" to the cookies or cupcakes and the donuts were sooooo dry. For my son to give up his treats, that says something. I bought a carrot cake cupcake with cream cheese icing, couldn't taste the carrot cake and def not the cream cheese icing. Cookies were tasteless and my donut was so dry and crumbly. I'm so disappointed and this place is NOT cheap. Its too bad but maybe they should tweak some of the recipes because again, I really want to love this bakery and...
