Two words: Mexican coffee. OK, maybe some more: barbacoa. chili-infused pickled red onions. Homemade tortillas. An enormous bowl of diced onion, limes and cilantro on every table. I guess that's more than two words.
I used to say that the best and most authentic Mexican food in Sacramento came from the great taco trucks in the area, but I was wrong. It comes from Lalo's.
On a weekend, get here before they close at 4:30 and split a pound ($9) of barbacoa - delicately grilled aromatic lamb - and a bowl or two of the subtly spiced consome, a flavorful lamb, rice, and garbanzo bean broth. Comes with a stack of perfect tortillas, grilled onions and jalapeños.
The coffee is spiced with cinnamon and a lot of sugar and is fantastic. Desserts include coffee-flavored flan; in the summer months, expect several delicious agua frescas to be available.

Read moreWorst tacos ever!! The restaurant was clean like it was time for it to close. The cook was not wearing gloves!! No one spoke English, and when I asked for chicken tacos in Spanish, she pulled a bag of cooked plain chicken, with no date on it, from a refrigerator. Then went to the back and grabbed a container of meat from the back. I asked how old it was and she couldn't understand me. Then I was about to leave when a customer asked if he could help translate. I was able to order street tacos. She then goes to grab to bag of plain chicken from the fridge, and threw it on the grill and dumped oil on it. She threw the tortillas on the grill with no oil or anything, and took them off while still pale. Proceeded to reach in the onion and cilantro container with no gloves and gave it to me. Worst tacos I've ever eaten. I gave them away to some homeless men. Thumbs down!!! P.S. I KNOW I SHOULD HAVE WALKED OUT.. IM...
Read moreThis place is really good. I came in for the first time and wanted a bean and cheese burrito at first but kinda decided I wanted to get some carne asada tacos since you can never go wrong with those. I would say the tacos are really authentic and made with love by the friendly older lady who works in the kitchen. She might be the reason why I would want to come back to get the tacos again. The quality of the carne asada is spectacular and it's very hard for me to give tacos a 10/10 and this place deserves it. They are very quick at making the tacos as well. I would recommend anyone who's really into carne asada tacos to try...
