I usually don't review, but I felt compelled to do so. First of all the lady who helped us was extremely nice and pleasant to chat with. Having said that, If you're looking for the original Shoki ramen flavors from the R street location, this is not it. The menu is completely different and pretty much reduced to nothing. The ramen noodles are still quite tasty with a nice texture and bite. BUT, everything else just lacked flavor in my opinion. The broth was the biggest disappointment. It tasted like salted water and I ended up not eating most of it. The chashu was cut thick and not the desired way to eat, at least for me. Also the ramen is criminally over priced. The basic bowl is $20 with no egg, nori, etc. For $20 you get noodles, broth, meat, and green onions. In order to get more things you have to pay almost $30! There's no way that a ramen bowl should cost this much in Sacramento when you compare to other ramen houses that charge significantly less and include the classic ramen ingredients like the egg and nori. You also have to make reservations, which is inconvenient if you drop in. Additionally, you're obliged to clean after yourself (like separating your bowl, spoons, etc in a separate dispenser) since there isn't really any waiters. You're basically your own bus boy. With the lack of flavor and high cost, I just don't really see the benefit of returning. I wish them all the...
Read moreOkay number one you have to know that this place is only opened on the weekends so if you're planning to go plan accordingly. Luckily we went about midday to enjoy some Ramen and it was very tame when it came to the crowd. There were roughly eight other people there to group set inside the others were outside.
The service was impeccable. We were greeted very warmly by the person behind the cashier and they gave us a quick rundown of the different options. Especially what is considered the star attraction on the menu. That would be all the different spicy style ramens would have their very own section on the menu.
The food itself was very very flavorful. I'm not going to lie I cannot remember the name of the two ramens we got I believe one was the sHoyu Ramen and the other one was a Godzilla Ramen. My husband and I split some of the meal with each other and both were fantastic.
The one change I would make with my dish would be to see if I could get the garlic chips a little bit more fried within the ramen. I'm a texture person and that nice fried crunch would have put it over for me.
We also enjoyed the spam musubi, pork belly bites, and shared one of this Sapporo supreme beers.
It's a lovely place and if you have the ability to go support it please do because it needs all the love it can get on the weekends with...
Read moreShoki was my favorite ramen joint in Sacramento. That being said, the quality here has continually declined each year. At first I was happy to see all the new options on the menu for vegetarians, vegans, gluten intolerant, etc, but it seems that each time the menu is stretched wider, the quality goes lower and lower. Even the basics weren't done correctly (I don't remember ordering my noodles al dente to the point that the cross section is half uncooked). A marinated egg should be complimentary with a bowl of ramen, but even after paying extra for it, it was tough (old) and didn't have any flavor. Similar also to the cha shu which was thinly cut, dry, and had no flavor. The details weren't cared about as can be seen by cold meat on the tan tan men and the undercooked noodles. Also the service was quite bad. The restaurant was not even half full and there was a wait just to get a menu. If I wait to be seated then the menu should come quite quickly. Furthermore if I have ramen then I shouldn't need to ask for the condiments. Then after asking for them they didn't bring the chili oil which was why I asked in the first place.
Shoki used to be the best, back when they had fewer menu items all cooked perfectly but those days have ended it seems. I will...
