I have now been to this new location many times in the few visits back to hometown Saginaw. While I miss the squeak in every step, the ancient bathrooms, the chalkboard with the same markings for years, the larger room, and the art work, the new location and evolution of the current Red Eye is well worth its wait. This is the only coffee shop needed to visit in Saginaw. It is not corporate nor a chain from an adjacent city pushing its religion through capitalism. It is a local woman owned business that has been a staple of Saginaw for decades.
With the new chapter of their history, they now have an excellent updated selection of snacks. I always opt for the hummus bagel with cherry tomatoes and lemon. It hits so well. Their espresso is so much better as well as their entire program. Completely overhauled, they have so many options for all kinds of cafe enthusiasts.
Opt for one of the multiple batches from different origins, or stick with a matcha with a banana. A variety of tea and caffeine-free options galore are also available.
Don’t worry old regulars, I’m still sure they have the mudslide and their other signature lattes I have grown to know the Red Eye Cafe to have for the past 25 years or more of my life.
I used to run small concerts at the C. A. G. E. (Collective Arts Gallery and Exchange) where the Red Eye is supposed to reopen. I have been anxiously been waiting since the day they closed to reopened. I want to sit in that space and reminisce the packed room and hear the songs in my head.
It’s sad it’s taking so long to re-open as I don’t want to support StarBucks and maybe I’d rather being in Saginaw than go to Shields for a sit down setting.
