I was excited to read about this restaurant and thought I could get some authentic bahn mi in St George. That is not the case. I have had a LOT of bahn mi in Saigon and Singapore and large Asian neighborhoods in St Paul, MN and Portland, OR and Las Vegas. What is different here from all of the other bahn mi I have had? The pork is scanty and is not Char siu - no red coating on the outside of the white pork. Not as tasty. Due to the skimpy amount of pork they add ham which is not that tasty and which I have never had before on bahn mi. I looked this up and apparently it could be authentic and is called Cha lua, but I don't like it that well compared to char siu pork. My sandwich had almost no jalapeno peppers and so it was not spicy like it should be. Quite bland There were too many vegetables relative to meat. Service was SLOW! When we got there we were the only customers ordering. It took 15-20" to get our sandwich. When I walk into my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in St Paul, they are FAST!! They make a delicious bahn mi right in front of me in less than 5 minutes. My wife had a different sandwich and said basically the same thing. Very bland and too many vegetables relative to meat content. We won't be...
Read moreThis is a place you want to like more than you do.
It was a Tuesday night. They were not busy. Their menu has an extensive list of items without details, and they have a single register. This caused a wait as the second ones in line while the party in front of us got the answers they needed before deciding what to order.
We made simple choices: a smoothie ($6) and a made-to-order creme brulee-filled fried bread item ($4.75).
It was a bit of a wait. The Creme Brulee was brought to our table first, and the smoothie showed up ten minutes later.
The fried bread tasted good, but it was the size of a single Popeyes biscuit, so it was not worth the cost.
The smoothie didn't taste like anything and was not worth the calories or cost.
Note that the fried breads are gluten-free; they use rice flour instead. So, here's a heads-up if you are allergic to rice.
We were short on time and didn't have time to waste in line waiting for a tasteless smoothie. So we threw it away.
Despite it being a slow night and there being plenty of staff, the trash can adjacent to the straws and napkins was overflowing.
They have some work to do to stay in business. We wish them luck refining their business for the...
Read moreOh man, I think I just died and went to heaven. Best gluten-free donut I’ve ever had in my life! And I was on a search to find a decent gluten-free donut. I searched in New York City, and I searched in Los Angeles. Who knew that I would find out right here in Little old St George? Just be aware, they run out quick. But they make them fresh every day. So early bird gets the donut.
I also ate their lemongrass tofu salad, and it was superb! (even after binging myself on the donut) I am definitely making this place one of my favorite places to eat.
Rumors have it that they used to have more products that were gluten-free. Especially beignets. I hope that one day they can be convinced to bring that back. This place is honestly an answer to to a celiac prayers. Donuts are four dollars, but absolutely amazing. Darn...
