First of all: deep dish. I’m a Chicagoan born and raised on Malnatis, Dues, Giordanos and more Malnatis. When I go back, we eat deep dish. When I’m here in Saint Paul, I dream about deep dish. Once in awhile we will bake a frozen Malnatis, if only for the smells. This gem under our noses is the best, most authentic Chicago deep dish there is north of Lake County IL. My Wisco wife will tell you that I am a stingy, cynical, crabby and sometimes unfairly dismissive reviewer of deep dish. We barely even try new attempts I’ve been let down so many times. The Shoppe’s Spinach and garlic deep dish is 6 stars on this scale. Get it. Let’s go back now! The kids thin pepperoni and half chef salad with a side of garlic bread were just ok. Past thin (“nyc style”) pizzas we’ve had there or picked up were fine. All of that is just to throw you off the scent or kowtow to more basic midwestern palettes. Don’t let it. Go deep here!

EDIT: just got the deep dish pizza from here, it was very good! So, go deep dish or nothing in my experience. Original review: Pretty underwhelming. I went to the store and got a calzone with onions and garlic. After the first bite I realized that the garlic and onions in the calzone were raw, which baffled me. I would never serve someone raw garlic in my house, especially when it’s inside of something else. Also bought a pizza to go for $7, it was about the quality of a $1.50 frozen Roma pizza one would find in a grocery store. The only reason this place gets 2 stars is that it was clean and the service was fine. Food should be avoided if possible.

Wow, I'm amazed by the deep dish this time. We got 3 pizzas. Buffalo, bbq and the meat deep dish. Its been a while since we've been here because we had been underwhelmed around 2022 and decided to try again tonight since it was our staple pizza location from 2010 to 2018. They've clearly made some changes for the better since covid times. Perfectly cooked deep dish, slight recipe change maybe? Either way 12/10 Increased toppings vs. Our experience in the past. Major major improvement there. 👏 Excellent showing tonight and if you haven't been in a while, give them another shot to support local business. Enormous improvement.

Disappointing. Being from Chicago and also liking New York and Detroit style pizza, it feels like this place barely knows what pizza is based on my experience here. I ordered the BBQ Chicken pizza and it was absolutely bizarre. They clearly prepared it in such a way that they cut the crust before putting any toppings on it, and nowhere on the menu did they say it would have anything more than chicken and BBQ sauce in addition to the normal cheese and tomato sauce. But when I got it was covered in an absurd amount of cheese, olives that clearly came from a can, lettuce that can only be described as “not very fresh” and a stupid amount of sliced tomato, as well as some onion and other stuff I can’t even identify. I don’t mind a lot of these toppings, but lettuce on pizza seems wrong and the taste of the olives they used clashed horribly with everything else, and I normally love olives on pizza. The BBQ sauce was vaguely spicy but not sweet, and the lettuce was bitter. All in all, it was way too much to put on a pizza and despite only being 10” I couldn’t even eat half of it before putting the rest in the fridge. When I ordered I thought the pizza seemed expensive but given how much was on it I understand why. I have yet to find pizza I like in the twin cities and I was really hoping for better here.

The only positives were the fact that my order was ready when they said it would be and pickup was easy. If I try this place again I sure won’t be getting what I got this time.

EDIT: The worst part didn’t come until the next day when I had some of the worst intestinal distress of my life....

I have never left a review that wasn’t 5 stars, but unfortunately I just had a very bad experience at Italian Pie Shoppe. We ordered a pizza to go but decided to sit down inside the restaurant (the tables were all empty except 2). We ate for a couple minutes without issue but when I took out a bottle of water that I brought, and the woman working there told me it wasn’t allowed. I put it away and she then told us we shouldn’t be eating the pizza inside the restaurant if we ordered to go. We asked her why because we paid for the pizza and even left a tip, but she decided to escalate the situation and kick us out of the restaurant. This women claimed she was the owner named Katie. This is no way to treat a loyal customer, and another party of customers even cheered for us on the way out since they witnessed us get mistreated by Katie. I like the food here and come here fairly often, but unfortunately will never return. I’ve never experienced anything like this.

Update: I reached out to management via email and phone and still no response after...
