I know I'm a literature nerd, but I drove all the way from Los Angeles to Salinas just to visit the Steinbeck House and the Steinbeck Center. And I thought the Steinbeck House was just lovely. It's only open for lunch Tuesday thru Saturday 11:30am-1:00pm. Street parking in the neighborhood was easy to find. I managed to sneak in without a reservation, but people who came after weren't so lucky and had to go chill in the gift shop in the basement while they waited for a spot. So advance reservations are recommended. Menus change weekly. I had the chicken, apple and melted brie sandwich and Steinbeck tea, which were delicious. The volunteer servers were warm and welcoming to an exhausted traveler and the gorgeous and elegant home seemed like the most genteel oasis after the many miles of highway. The staff may have time to show visitors around the home or provide historical info about the house if there is time. They may have special treats available that aren't on the menu. When I was there word got out that they had apricot chiffon pie that was not advertised, and it was dreamy. They also don't automatically serve them, but if you ask for them they'll bring a basket of dinner rolls wrapped in linen. Prices were very reasonable. Please tip well as servers are volunteers. Don't miss the gift shop in the basement which has artifacts from Steinbeck and all of his books for sale. I was glad I made the...

Walkin up th stairs into..... see the end The hostess and all the staff who welcomed us are all volunteer, they are welcoming, amazingly warm, friendly, bursting with excitement and energy willing to tell another and another story. Or introduce you to the delightful wonderful meals of the day prepared by their special "chef"; the "Steinbeck Country Sheriff he roams the establishment, its never a dull moment, always a tid bit about something splendid about the town and John Steinbeck, his history, friends and family. He seems so familiar, you want to hear them over and over again. At the house we were so enthralled with everything, every moment having lunch in the "parlour" only where special guests were served, right across from the one fireplace! This was a great ambience. The house was out of a real picture book! After lunch we were flurry down the back exit to the bookstore, that was a very wonderful pleasant experience! I loved every minute of browsing. Although I did not purchase anything that time. When I go back there are definitely a few items I will purchase. On a vacation or a day off, and want to add more to your itinerary? this is a great experience. Out of a real picture book... the end,...

Steinbeck's house in Salinas offers a unique historical experience. The restaurant, run by voluntary neighbors, provides a charming atmosphere. Enjoyed a delightful lunch with my husband and son, savoring the special brownie, a recipe from Steinbeck's sister. It's a lovely place that allows you to immerse yourself in the history and imagine the life of Steinbeck and his family. Highly recommended for those who appreciate a blend of good food and a rich cultural setting. Additionally, beneath the restaurant, there's a quaint shop offering a variety of Steinbeck-themed souvenirs. It's a perfect opportunity to take home a piece of the literary legacy while savoring the historical ambiance of the place. The selection includes unique items that add to the overall charm of the...

Stunning Victorian home of John Steinbeck turned into a restaurant. Excellent food, well presented and competitively priced. I cannot say enough about the wonderful women who work here. Their service is a labor of love...truly, for they are not paid. They are proud to volunteer and work in an authentic, designer decorated Victorian mansion, which was the home of John Steinbeck and maintained as a credit to his memory. These fabulous women donate their tips to the upkeep of the mansion. Their knowledge of Salinas, John Steinbeck and the Monterey Bay area; their service skills and genuine warmth of hospitality was palpable. All deserve a shout out! Carol, your warmth and charm we so enjoyed! Thank you! Picked up gifts from the shop downstairs by local artists.

Whenever I am in the area, I set my schedule to ensure I can have lunch at the beautiful Steinbeck House. This is one of the original farm-to-table restaurants in the Valley...and the food is always wonderful. The women who volunteer there as hostesses and servers are each bright and lovely additions to the experience. If you are a Steinbeck fan, you will love the tours of the home...and the gift shop has some terrific book selections along with Steinbeck family memorabilia. Be aware, they are open only limited hours for lunch, and once a month for dinner, plus some special tea events. I rarely have reservations for lunch and have always been accommodated. Dinner and teas demand reservations.

It would really pain me to hear one day that this place went under. Not only are the basics covered (good food, attentive staff, etc.), but it goes above and beyond in every way. The staff are not only friendly, but very informative, and if you catch them at a slow period, they may even show you around like they did me. It is a firm contention of mine that more places like this need to exist, and the ones that do are a dying breed--that's not to mean restaurants with this specific of a theme in particular, but ones with this caliber of character and creativity.
