I know I'm a literature nerd, but I drove all the way from Los Angeles to Salinas just to visit the Steinbeck House and the Steinbeck Center. And I thought the Steinbeck House was just lovely. It's only open for lunch Tuesday thru Saturday 11:30am-1:00pm. Street parking in the neighborhood was easy to find. I managed to sneak in without a reservation, but people who came after weren't so lucky and had to go chill in the gift shop in the basement while they waited for a spot. So advance reservations are recommended. Menus change weekly. I had the chicken, apple and melted brie sandwich and Steinbeck tea, which were delicious. The volunteer servers were warm and welcoming to an exhausted traveler and the gorgeous and elegant home seemed like the most genteel oasis after the many miles of highway. The staff may have time to show visitors around the home or provide historical info about the house if there is time. They may have special treats available that aren't on the menu. When I was there word got out that they had apricot chiffon pie that was not advertised, and it was dreamy. They also don't automatically serve them, but if you ask for them they'll bring a basket of dinner rolls wrapped in linen. Prices were very reasonable. Please tip well as servers are volunteers. Don't miss the gift shop in the basement which has artifacts from Steinbeck and all of his books for sale. I was glad I made the...

Or introduce you to the delightful wonderful meals of the day prepared by their special "chef"; the "Steinbeck Country Sheriff he roams the establishment, its never a dull moment, always a tid bit about something splendid about the town and John Steinbeck, his history, friends and family. He seems so familiar, you want to hear them over and over again. At the house we were so enthralled with everything, every moment having lunch in the "parlour" only where special guests were served, right across from the one fireplace! This was a great ambience. The house was out of a real picture book! After lunch we were flurry down the back exit to the bookstore, that was a very wonderful pleasant experience! I loved every minute of browsing. Although I did not purchase anything that time. When I go back there are definitely a few items I will purchase. On a vacation or a day off, and want to add more to your itinerary? this is a great experience. Out of a real picture book... the end,...
