I had heard of this place, but only decided to go there last Saturday (2/10), for lunch with my sweetheart! All I can say is that, being from NYC, I have high expectations and standards for food and service. The Candied Yam exceeded my expectations!!
The atmosphere is relaxed, but with an air of upscale, especially with the jazz playing. Service (ask for Jonathan) was terrific and we felt like we had known him for a long time, even though we just met.
The food was 1st class: I had the fried Crabcake, which was perfect! Since we were at The Candied Yam, THAT'S what I chose for my side, and I wasn't disappointed - it tasted like Thanksgiving dinner, but more like dessert, than a side. I told my sweetheart that it was like yam pudding (similar to bread pudding), which she agreed with, after stealing a bite!
I enjoyed the experience so much that I decided to go back on Tuesday (2/13), for a business meeting. OK....I can understand having 1 good or bad experience, HOWEVER, consistency means that they are doing something right...every time!
We had a different waiter from Saturday, but he was great! I wanted to try the fried chicken, but he explained that it was a 20-minute wait, since it was made fresh. We didn't have the time to wait, so I ordered a BLT, with chips and a great Kosher pickle. Again, I've had good and bad BLT's, and this was the BEST I've had - perfectly toasted and the bacon was excellent!
Since I really wanted to try the fried chicken, I ordered the 2-piece white, to take home, along with my NEW favorite side, candied yams, and the mac n' cheese, which is another new favorite of mine! I ate the chicken for dinner - it was juicy, yet crisp, but not crunchy (happily)!
The person I was with ordered the Cobb Salad and she had to get a box to take home 1/2 of it...it was huge and she said, "it was even better than Panera's", which had always been her favorite before!
Needless to say, I will be back - as often as possible!! Interesting side note: The manager told me that they are moving to a larger venue, into the old nightclub, next to Acme, on the south side of town! Bummer!!! I live on the north side of town - however, I will happily drive to the new location. They plan on having live music! I can't imagine how they can fail, if they keep up the service and food quality!
My only worry is that I'll have to wait for a seat, once the uninitiated try it out...I...
Read moreThis is probably the BEST soul food restaurant I’ve ever been to in my life and that’s saying something because I’m originally from Georgia. The ambience is very unique and inviting and makes you feel like you’re right at home. Our waitress Ruth was so amazing. She was very polite and knowledgeable about the menu and was patient with us as we were indecisive about what to get because everything looked so delicious. Let me first start off about the sweet tea. This sweet tea is the type of tea that your grandma made back in the day. Not that watery watered down type of tea the other restaurants serve. It was so delicious and Ruth made sure our cups never ran empty. I had to make sure that I got a to go cup with no ice in it to make sure I can relive the flavor. My partner and I ended up ordering the special with the half rack, ribs and the chicken that came with two sides. The ribs were so tender that the meat was practically falling off the bone. I’m not sure what barbecue sauce they use, but it definitely was so good it made you lick your fingers. The chicken was seasoned just right and tasted so good as well Now on the sides. Finally some mac & cheese that taste like some southern mac & cheese. Not the watery box mac and cheese that these other restaurants try to serve. This Mac and cheese was the definition of perfection. The collard greens were delicious as well. It tasted good without it, but I appreciate a restaurant that gives you vinegar and hot sauce to put on your collard greens. And last but not least the yams. Oh my gosh, the yams are off the chain. Yams so good it makes you want to slap your momma. I had to order some to go, just so I can eat it for dinner later when I got back to my hotel. The Candied Yam is an all around five star restaurant for me and anytime. I’m back in the Salisbury area or near the Salisbury area. I’m definitely coming back to this place because it can’t be no longer...
Read moreThis was my first experience at the restaurant. I went there for my anniversary based on some of the reviews that I read on google and yelp. Where do I start, when walking into the restaurant, there are about 5 people behind the bar area that is staring like you are invading the place. Then the main owner asked how many people and it was just us, so we said 2. Then out of no where here is the waitress taking us to the seats. We chose our drinks, which some things were not in stock. So my wife had to ask for a different drink 3 times, because the other two were not available. Then we selected an app, which was small but it was very good. We selected our main course. We had to wait 20-30 minutes for it to come out. When that happen, there were 3 other tables waiting after us. The mac and cheese was bland, the greens were good, yams were super sweet but not bad, the chicken was juicy, and the rib was not my wife liking, because of the sauce (ketchup flavor not bbq). We actually saw someone send it back. I felt bad for the waitress, she was trying to handle 5 tables (placing the order, getting drinks, and bringing out the food) while everyone was behind the bar just relaxing. She deserves a raise. I am not sure if we would come back, but I hope someone reads this, because some things need to change. The thing that made me give it a 2, because there was a group that came later (Caucasian family) that got their food within 5 minutes while other people had to wait a long time. It just didn't make sense to me. That is the only time the owner came to help the waitress. It almost took 20 minutes to...
