I just had to try it for myself!
How many times have you read foodie opinions that relate their dining experience in effusive, superlative terms. "OMG, it was the bestest mostest bomb hands down!" I don' t even know what that means! I can only surmise that the author was some kind of munitions engineer with a great affinity for their vocation coupled with a contrary perspective on normal arrest procedure ("hands up") and framed by an admirable persistence for having tried the sum total of restaurants available in the category of focus to be able to opine about a restaurant or food item that tops all others. Can you imagine say, the number of enchiladas one would have to consume before crowning the best! My hat's off to the person who can uncategorically claim something is truly the absolute best!
I had seen various explosive experts' and pyromaniacs' opinions a number of times before relative to Che's Burgers and Chicken and decided that I must try it for myself. I had been to the often touted holy grail of fried chicken, Chatman's, but wanted to broaden my cotton pickin' fried chicken horizons all while circumnavigating the commercial size Leghorn establishments.
Zounds! Does this place have a plethora of chicken piece and combination offerings. Yes sir. Yes sir. Two signs full. What this place does not have is any seating inside or out to enjoy that white cardboard box full of hot fried yard bird delights.
In as much as we had not packed our picnic blanket and ice chest, we settled for 2 two piece fried chicken breasts w/ roll to go and probably missed out on some good fried okra, mac'n cheese, fried gizzards and Big Red.
We will hope for a revolutionary chicken repast of divine elevation when we rekindle the warmth of the golden breast pieces for supper service, and sample that purportedly non-parial poulet frites (sans bomb explosion or conflagration icons)! Che's shall remain an open item on my San Antonio Fried Chicken Rank & Register (at least for the next few hours).

Read moreWow! Che's Chicken & Burgers is a hidden gem. We asked a cab driver,"where can we go buy fried chicken but not pay for sides?" He instantly said Che's Chicken on S. Preza and boy was he right. Che's Chicken & Burgers is not a sit down restaurant. It is order at the windows and wait for your to go order. When I arrived there were two people infront of me. Che's has a huge menu of chicken, burgers and fish. The staff was great, the lady that took my order walked me through the crosses and answered some questions for me. I mentioned that I tried to call ahead and she explained that during their busy times they don't answer the phone. We ordered two, 16 peoce mixed dinners and two 2 peice dark orders. I expected to wait at least 10 minutes but my order came out almost right away. The chicken was hot, crispy and not greasy at all. The rolls were perfect and a hit with the family. We will definitely come back for more chicken and try the burgers and fish plates. Che's is an old school restaurant, that serves quality food and their employees seem to enjoy working with each other and at the restaurant. Side note: the man after me was a chef from a local restaurant, he was coming off his shift and told the lady taking his order that he passes by everyday and sees the lines of people and finally had an opportunity to stop and try Che's...
Read moreHow did I grow up here and not know about this hidden gem??? Fortunately the hubs had this little ace up his sleeve. If you are looking for a good old fashioned griddle fried burger THIS is the spot!! Nothing fancy just honest fried food at a great price. Counter help was super nice and friendly. Definitely don't be thrown by the simple walk up counter and a couple of picnic tables, I'm sure it's how they keep the prices so low and affordable. Bacon was super crispy so you actually know it's on the burger. Produce was super fresh, bright and crunchy...even included perfectly sliced red onions. Onion rings were nice, thick cut and beautifully crunchy. Hubby had chicken strips, which I didn't try but they looked like souther battered deep fried yumminess. Sweet Tea could have been a little sweeter for my tastes but it was fresh. As an added treat don't miss the corn nuggets (truely addictive) or the fried pies. Yes ladies and gents there is now an alternative to the way to greasy, plastic tasting fried pie from Church's (YUCK). Hands down this will be my "go-to" when craving fried food that actually tastes good and doesn't come with a quarter cup of grease. Hello cheat day you have just found something worth...
