Some people might call this little "snack" shop a dive, others, a quick fast food stop with window service. and still others a neighborhood oasis for some very good eats in a rustic, folksy southwest San Antonio setting.
We visited on a sweltering July afternoon on a trip across town to try the highly touted hamburgers with home made buns. One lone mister blew intermittent clouds of cooling water vapor our way as we stood outside the ordering window of this long, older stone facade building and made our selection. For just a little over $8, you get a big double cheese burger, 1/2 lb. of meat, fries or rings and a drink. I couldn't resist the offering of aguas frescas and ordered a big 30 oz. sandia (watermelon).
Tammy, one of the very friendly and personable owners of the family run business made us feel more like old friends than paying customers. When she found out that we had driven across town just to try her food she graciously offered dessert of our choosing once we had finished our burgers.
Just to the side of the exterior order window is a wood frame door that leads into a screened-in porch with picnic tables. We chose a table and sat down to wait for our order to be delivered from another window inside the porch. I was thinking that we were going to sweat to death with the thermometer well north of 90 degrees, but the industrial sized fan at one end of the porch blew gale force wind that dried your perspiration as soon as it formed. It was a little nostalgic for me as it reminded me of my childhood in an unairconditioned house in west San Antonio eating supper at a picnic table on the porch addition of our little house, fan blowing to keep us cool. The only downside was keeping napkins and such from blowing away unless they were weighted down.
The burger was served hot, juicy and medium done.Just my style. The rings were steaming and crunchy-good and the sandia a.f., cold and delicious. Tammy told us that her father bakes the buns for the burgers at 5:00 am every morning and we were glad he did as they were soft and tasty yet did not disintegrate after a few bites. He also owns the barber shop in the same building next door..
For dessert we chose an orange drink that was made of shaved ice, orange flavoring, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and an orange slice on top. If you ever had a dreamsicle when you were a kid, the taste has been captured in this drink. I am craving one as I sit here describing it. Perfect dessert and cool-down drink for a
If you don't mind the heat and want to go to a place where you feel like you are an invited guest at a friend's back yard barbeque, this is it. Definitely nothing fancy and about as rustic a dining experience as you can get. But don't let that stop you. Tammy and her family will take very good care of you, and like us, you will want to return for another dose of south Texas hospitality and another helping of the very good food and drink (you won't want to miss the family burger specials either for a...
Read moreFlavor: B Service: A Tea: D Solo dining: A This place appears like it’s a lean-to shed of a rundown old corner store building that now houses a boutique, barber shop, and burger stand (airport-hair-care-tire-center vibes). Before I could get up to the window, a woman leans out of her truck and asks “You haven’t been here before, have you sir?” I acknowledged that she was right and then she just said “Well everything is good, everything.” Endearing level 10 though not exactly helpful. I got the “El Big Boy” at my order-taker’s suggestion. It’s hard to say no to bacon, maple syrup, a fried egg, tots, grilled onions, and cheese. All of those flavors came through in a teamwork-makes-the-dream-work kinda way, except the syrup which I couldn’t detect. And the burger itself was flavorful too… no toppings carrying the flavor load here. You could even see the black pepper in the burger patty. My heart fluttered a little. But with all this greatness, the burger was too dry for me to love it. So I’m giving it a B on flavor because juiciness impacts flavor. Cooking the burger a little shorter and making that egg over-easy so the yolk oozes out could be game-changers for this promising creation. The perfectly-cooked-and-seasoned crinkle-cut fries and the “dream sauce” (akin to Chick-fil-A sauce but lighter and better) were great complements. Drinks are limited to can Cokes or a few flavors of agua fresca. I got the watermelon which was a little intense for my taste. If you’re dining “in” you’re sitting at picnic tables on a screened-in porch (and sweating in all the places if you’re there on a summer afternoon). I was there when we had the perfect number-of-parties-to-number-of-wall-fans ratio so everyone could sit in front of one and no one had to die. I did notice one smart mama sent her daughter to order and wait so she could stay in her air conditioned vehicle until her burger was ready (#reasonstohavekids). Perhaps I’d give this spot another chance on a cooler day. Cheers to Frozen Dreams for serving up upscale burgers in a not-so-upscale part of town! #theburgertrail...
Read moreMy mom ordered ahead of time so she wouldn't wait as soon as she got there come to find out first they had told her wait time would be 35min we got there and called she had to wait another 10min so we waited and mind you they had her phone number so they were able to call we almost waited an hr and a half for the order. My mom had to call they were telling her to wait another amount of minutes till she told them all the different wait times they told her and come to find out her order had been ready for a while. Our fries are cold.
Please yall need to pay attention to your orders that are coming out. Customers want there food nice and hot not all cold and maybe yall should try call your customers if there order is gonna take a bit longer do to yall wanting customers to return. I understand yall had customers because I saw it but the lady at the window even had time to take drinks to probably family or someone she could of very well called them personally and asked them to pick the drinks at the window and used that same time to check what orders were done and weren't.
Honestly there was another customer right next to us who had ordered which honestly I think they ordered food and a mangonada, there order was almost taking just as long as my mom's just because the workers were waiting for it to be scooped out that's why there order was taking just as long so that show's that there ain't no direction within MANAGMENT!!!
It all would of just took one simple call or even a call up to the customers number have them come up and let...
