I have been a Tommy’s regular for 10-12 years (previously said 20, but my husband said they haven’t been around that long, so I was not remembering correctly, but we have been regulars since they opened), so my review is based on many meals and experiences.
Most of the time, Tommy’s (Wurzbach location - can’t vouch for the others) is the best choice for breakfast tacos, and it’s always a solid choice for lunch, too. Theirs is the only carne guisada I will eat - it’s perfect. Their salsa verde is also second to none. Their flour tortillas are a little thicker than most others, but they’re also tastier and less greasy than most. They use shredded American cheese on some items instead of cheddar, but if that gives you pause I urge you to try it their way and see what you think, bc it’s surprisingly delicious - they know what they’re doing. All the Tex-Mex staples are served here, full of flavor and in generous portions. You can’t go wrong… usually.
There are a couple of minor drawbacks, sometimes. The first is to be expected, given their longevity and success: it’s almost always very busy. It isn’t a big deal, though, as that heavy flow is their norm and they typically handle the volume smoothly. I really only have one issue with Tommy’s, and fortunately it doesn’t happen all the time, but it happens often enough to be worth mentioning. The eggs and potatoes on their breakfast tacos are not always entirely cooked. When I open up a taco that contains eggs and see a soggy yellow interior on the flour tortilla, it ruins the taco and puts me off my food entirely. I’m also not a fan of crunchy not-quite-done potatoes, which is another thing that I bite into pretty frequently when eating a Tommy’s taco. Other places have the same issue, though, and at least when Tommy’s potatoes are cooked all the way through they are outstanding in taste and texture, which is not true of other places. I wish they better quality control on those two items, but I still take the gamble, because when Tommy’s is on its A-game it...
Read moreTortillas are on the thick side but do have a decent flavor. My machacado had some unhealthy-looking yellowish oil running out.
However I would rate the taste of that machacado as above average.
Papa's rancheras was a good compliment to my other taco however sure didn't seem like they put much effort into it basically a spoonful of ranchero sauce on some potatoes .
A few pieces of onions and jalapenos would be nice. With that sauce.
Placed my order over the phone arrived soon after to pick it up. One of the servers made eye contact with me and put her hand to her ear making the phone sign I nodded my head yes after that I was basically just ignored.
As a Caucasian guy kind of used to this when you walk into some Mexican restaurants you can get put on the back burner so I just kept my eye open for a fresh order brought up to the register as there were several other sitting there took a place in line and pay for my meal and was on my way.
At no point was I made to feel welcomed as others have mentioned no one seems to tell you anyting. In the way of much acknowledgement letting you know what to expect although there seems to be plenty of people standing around chit-chatting.
I've lived in the area for a little over 15 years and have had this basic experience at Tommy's throughout came here a couple of times when I first moved in and haven't come back often maybe a handful of times because of it. I've recently seen that it's super packed sometimes and was curious to find out if they've hired some Mexican food zen master .
No unfortunately not just the same old Tommy's with a new facade.
It's a decent place to get a couple of tacos from if you're in this area you could...
Read moreTommy’s is my favorite must-have every time I come to town! I’m originally from Dallas and have lived in Vegas for about 14 years, but I travel to SA frequently to visit family. My mom took me here when there was only a single location open. I took my boyfriend here one of the first times we came together and made him a fanatic as well. Las Vegas really doesn’t have any good authentic Mexican or Tex-Mex food, and we were really craving some Tommy’s Carne Guisada and some homemade flour tortillas. My boyfriend took a shot in the dark to see if it was possible to have some shipped to us, and to our delight, they were extremely friendly as well as accommodating. We had them ship us a decent portion of both carne guisada and barbacoa, with some tortillas as well. They even managed to sneak in a Big Red! My boyfriend was over the moon for that one. Not only were they able to ship us an entire order from San Antonio to Las Vegas, but it traveled so well with their careful packaging, and it was EXACTLY what we had hoped for. The most glorious taste of home, right to our door. Thank you SO MUCH for our care package of goodies, we were over the moon at your care of packaging, quality of food, and even the little goodies inside. It was all so much more appreciated than you can imagine, that you sent us a little slice of heaven from SA. For the record, we froze some of it to make it last longer, and my god, each meal was so delicious. Thank you SO much, Tommy’s!! Love, some very appreciative...
