Came out to Tony G's on two separate occasions as wanted to try the food as a regular restaurant, but also as a brunch restaurant. The pictures of the food are individual orders off the regular menu, but also included a picture of the buffet brunch serving area as well as the Jazz band (Joe Posada). On neither trip did I have a reservation and the restaurant was full, but was able to get quickly seated.
For the menu ordering, tried many different items. Ordered the oxtail, fried catfish, gumbo, chicken & waffles, pork chop, and smothered chicken. Food came out quickly and looked great. I was a little confused on the portion sizes as it was inconsistent. The oxtail probably had the highest food cost, but had the largest portions. The catfish probably had the lowest food cost, but had the smallest portion. The catfish only came with 1 fillet, but the Oxtails had 4. Regardless, both dishes were amazing. The catfish was only 1 fillet, but was a nice thick cut of catfish. The oxtails were my favorite dish as they had a lot of meat on the bones and were full of flavor. The gumbo was another outstanding dish. The chicken & waffles was equally as good. The waffles have a nice sweet taste that caught me by surprise, but it worked. The pork chop and smothered chicken were good as well. Finished off the meal with a slice of pecan pie which had a nice sweet filling with a nice crisp layer of pecans.
For the Sunday brunch, came around 10:45a as the music was starting at 11a. It was full, but they had a table ready within 5 minutes. It's an all you can eat brunch buffet serving some of their menu items. For the mimosas, you can order by the glass ($7) or the bottomless mimosas ($18). If you order more than 2 mimosa, then the bottomless is the obvious better value. On the buffet cart, they had eggs, bacon, waffles, wings, grits, potatoes, tilapia, baked chicken, mac & cheese, collard greens, mashed potatoes, and corn. This was a nice spread of the typical breakfast items, but also some of their popular lunch/dinner items.
Although was a buffet, all the food was still prepared the same and tasted great. The breakfast items were just as you would expect. The waffles had the same sweet taste, but It was a little too sweet after the first waffle. Of the items, my favorites were the tilapia, wings, and the mashed potatoes. The tilapia had a nice crust on the top, wings were very crunchy, and the potatoes had a nice creamy texture. They also had a carving board of roasted chicken, peel & eat shrimp, fresh fruit, and slices of pie that are all included in the brunch buffet.
The best part of the buffet was the music of the Joe Posada band. They played a nice mix of classic jazz, but also classic R&B songs with a jazz twist. Joe did an impressive job of switching playing the different saxophones and singing. The drummer & keyboardist also did a great job of taking the lead and singing on different songs. They took requests and really played to the audience.
The regular menu and buffet menu were different experiences, but both were good, depending upon your mood. I slightly preferred the brunch as it was a nice relaxing meal with the ability to try many different menu items while enjoying some company over...
Read moreTony G's Soul Food is probably THE BEST restaurant I've been to this year! I can't believe I hadn't even known this gem was in my Hometown, San Antonio Tx! Upon arrival, I can see and understand if (would-be) patrons judged a book by it's cover, and took a pass. From the outside, Tony G's is modest, at best. No flashy signs or gimmicks trying to lure customers in will be found here. To those who know, know. To the adventurous and always down for new tastes connoisseurs, I now know what u know! Tony G's is a True Gem of a treasure!! Greeted upon entering, and over hearing the staff chat amongst one another, u can quickly tell this joint is Family owned and run. No chain restaurant here run by a GM who lives in a different area code! Natalie, my server, greets and presents the menus. Drink orders are taken and then served. While she was pouring the refreshment, the first thing that hits me, is the music. Very chill, mellow. The atmosphere was perfect! Not over crowded, but serenely perfect for an intimate lunch. Don't get me wrong, Tony G's can handle a crowd and deffo has the room and rooms for it! The memorabilia took me back to when legends were carving their names into stone, in all sorts of record books. I couldn't decide on which entrée I was gonna have, because honestly, being my first Soul Food eatery, I wanted a bit of everything!! I told myself, choose one to start with, and if it really is Food for the Soul, I will come back and just work my way down the entire menu!! I chose the Old fashioned Meatloaf! 2 sides come with the meal, and I chose green beans and mashed potatoes. Corn bread was my choice of bread. For me, the green beans were a bit bland, but the corn bread, the mashed pot, and the Meatloaf completely made up for it!! I ate the meal so quick, I really thought I ordered a child's plate!! I scarfed that chow down! I wish I could get this restaurant's name out to Everyone AND they mommas!! Everyone's gotta know about this magnificent Soul Food kitchen!! If u come across this review and think it an exaggeration, visit Tony G's urself! I can brag and brag and brag til I'm blue in the face. As the saying goes, The Proof is in the Pudding! See for urself and become one of us that knows!! Tony G's, keep up the GREAT WORK! CLEAN ESTABLISHMENT, FRIENDLY AND POLITE STAFF, AMAZING FOOD, AND SHOULD BE FEATURED ON TEXAS MONTHLY!! THANK U SO MUCH FOR FOLLOWING UR DREAM AND OPENING THIS SOUL FOOD EATERY!! People from far and wide should know about u and visit. If I had it my way, we'd make u rich. Quick! Definitely a must visit again! 5 stars! Brags, boasts, and hats off to u Tony G's!! So glad I know the taste of Soul Food and where I can go to satisfy that hunger!! Amazing!!...
Read moreWhat a great little find. It took two phones with navigation to find it LOL one of them I'm pretty sure has no idea what they're doing and one of them knew exactly where to go. The sad part is it turned out we were 7 minutes away from where we were, but it took us 20 minutes in a big circle to get back to there LOL. Okay so that out of the way what a great little patio when you drive up looks like it'll be really nice when the weather is more permissible. From the second we walked in the door people were smiling and greeting us. Our server, and I'm sorry I didn't get her name, was incredible. Big smiles super service what a great combination. I had the steak and shrimp, it is a sirloin which can have a tendency to be a little tougher but it was surprisingly on the tender side and that Grill flavor is always hard to beat. You get four shrimp on the side, decent size, love the batter. I got the mashed potatoes and gravy, we could not figure out what the magic ingredient was, but dang it was good. I also got the corn, nothing out of the ordinary through, going to want to try that mac and cheese on the next visit. My friend got the sweet yams and fried cabbage as their side. They said they wished the fried cabbage would have had some bacon, cuz bacon makes everything beautiful. But my friend said they were really both good. They also want to try the mac and cheese next time, we saw some go by and as always I had plate Envy lol. My friend had the shrimp plate again we both really enjoyed the batter. There was no way I was going to make it to dessert although I really wanted to try the sweet potato pie, but my friend took a piece of the cobbler to go it looked beautiful and was very hard not to open in the car LOL. When we first sat down they brought us these little cornbread muffins I'd ordered a la carte. I love the sweet cornbread so this is right up my alley. I just wish I could have had 18 of them, okay bad idea LOL. Overall great atmosphere, some serious air conditioning thank you thank you, and there wasn't a single song that played while we ate our late lunch that didn't have us dancing in our seats. We're both planning to come back together and with other people. I know what the G stands for but in our heads from this point forward that g...
