I was very surprised at the quality of food here. It's getting harder to find "authentic" AND high quality Italian-American places. I put authentic in quotes as the only place you'll get authentic Italian food is in Italy. For Italian-American fare, Umberto's is pretty darn good. My wife made reservations days in advance for our large party and they accommodated us perfectly. They have two dining rooms, one for smaller groups and one for larger groups. Upon arriving at around 5pm, we were taken through the restaurant to the dining room for groups. The restaurant was full, always a good sign! The food was amazing. Everyone at our table got something different and the spread was beautiful. From pizza to pasta, seafood to veal, everything tasted delicious. The pizzas were gooey cheesy goodness and the pastas were seasoned perfectly with their respective sauces bursting with flavor. We got calamari and muscles for appetizers and those were gone in a flash. The house kindly provided an order of bruschetta for the table as well as tons of bread and butter, in addition to bowls on the table of freshly grated Parmesan cheese to be spoon-poured on everything we ate! My wife and I are planning on coming back here for a romantic dinner date. It's totally got the vibe for it and the quality of food will make the date. They also allow outside bottles of wine with a regular $25 corkage fee.

Its a modest restaurant - nothing fancy but clean and open. The food is delicious, freshly made. Nothing like big chain restaurant pre-made dishes. Every dish I've tried, has been great; umberto's pasta, mushroom ravioli, tilapia, fried calamari, pizza, lasagna, etc. They also have delicious bread rolls (also made fresh daily, they mix herbs into the bread) and if you only order a salad, they are quite large. Also the servings are large so the best part is that you will have left overs. It's the only Italian restaurant I even bother taking leftovers because their sauces DO NOT break down, separate leaving the pasta dry. This means their dishes re-heat well and taste as good the next day. It should be noticeable by now, this has become one of my regular, favorite restaurants. I'll say that I prefer coming for lunch than at dinner. The chef seems different and so some dishes aren't as flavorful at night (particularly the risotto - which is my favorite side). The small amount of wait staff are usually on point, only on a couple occasions have they been slow. With the pandemic, wait staff ahem to change more rapidly but I think that's a common occurrence lately. Food continues to be yummy and worth it to me.

This was our first time here which came highly recommended by a friend of ours. The hostess was very welcoming, and sat us down immediately. The ambience was perfect for a romantic dinner, yet casual for family dining. Our waitress, and the rest of the staff was very attentive. They made sure our glasses were full of drink, and our table clean during our duration there. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer. Kudos to the chef and kitchen for making sure each plate was very presentable, and perfectly seasoned. Everything tasted amazing!! The minestrone soup was well seasoned, and you can tell it wasn’t just sitting in a pot waiting to be reheated. The fettuccine Alfredo was very creamy. The shrimp was jumbo size and tasted fresh. The chicken Parmesan came with two full size breast portions! This place does not skimp out on serving sizes, so best to bring your appetite or be prepared to take home leftovers. The best part is it won’t hurt your wallet. We will most definitely be coming back here to this magnificent hidden gem. If you’re a foodie, love great tasting food, or just in the area, be sure to stop by and fill your belly with goodness. =)

Saw this restaurant advertised on channel 4 news and was impressed with the food shown. It looked amazing. So my wife and I decided to try it out with a couple of friends who were on their way. We walked in and the place was buzzing but not completely full. We saw a couple of tables by the window which we preferred. We were then approached by a hostess that didn't even welcome us or introduced herself, she just signaled for us to follow her to sit at a table for 2 in a dark corner. We asked about sitting at one of the tables by the window and she mumbled that we couldn't, that they were for 5 people only. I respectfully asked if we required a reservation and she said no, but that we couldn't have those tables, and stormed off. She then returned and mumbled that we could have a four seater but had to wait for it to be cleaned off and stormed off again before we could say another word. We stood there waiting for about 5 minutes, moved towards the table and the hostess rushed back and told us not to go to the table because it wasn't clean yet. She finally allowed us to sit down, left and came back mumbling something or other literally dropped some plates off at the edge of the table with a glob of butter, mumbled something and stormed off. AGAIN!!!! We sat there for about another 5 minutes or so, staff walking around but no one giving us any attention. I was finally able to signal a server over and asked him if they served margaritas, which i thought I had seen in the TV advertisement. He chuckled and said they don't serve margaritas, and that I was mistaken, that they are not in TV. We asked him about the hostess and told him she was being very rude to us. He just chuckled again and said she was just hard to get along with as if the situation was funny. Suffice it to say that we were unable to get any service, however horrible it was. Not to make this an issue, but we saw mostly white people there and got the distinct feeling we were not welcome. We are all Hispanic. So we never got an opportunity to try the food. We did have an awful taste of their extremely bad and discriminating attitude and service. We all just got up and left, went to Mambos where we were very welcoming, treated us with respect AND EXCELLENT SERVICE!!! TRY IT AT YOU'RE OWN RISK. I'll certainly be posting this to my fb and insta to let folks know who is welcome and who is treated with absolute disrespect. PS: we were actually checking it out to try the amazing looking food and see about reserving for a birthday party of 30 people in 2 weeks. All Hispanic so it would've been a dire disaster!! NEVER...

We moved to San Antonio almost seven years ago. Since I first came here I have gone to Umberto's. I considered it my favorite Italian restaurant in the city. On 7-9-20 I called in two orders of Chicken Parmigiana for my daughter and myself. My daughter loves their spaghetti. The chicken and the rolls were not fresh. I have ordered the same dish for almost seven years and it is usually excellent. I called the next day to speak with a manager to let him/her know about my dissatisfaction with the food I ordered. When I asked to speak with the manager I was asked my name and why I needed to speak with the manager. I told the person on the phone my name and asked if it was necessary to give a reason for my call in order to speak with the manager. She ignored my question and asked again, in a very angry tone my reason for asking to speak with the manager. She then put me on hold without saying anything. She eventually came back on the line and asked the same questions again. She said it was company policy that I tell her why I needed to speak with the manager. I told her it was about food I ordered the previous day. She asked my name again and said she was the owner. I asked her why didn't she say that before and she ignored me. She then told me that I did not order any food at her restaurant. I was confused when she said that. I told her that I used my debit card to pay for it and told her the approximate time I ordered the food. She then said, "I don't believe a word coming out of your mouth". I became angry and asked her if she usually treats customers like that. She ignored me and asked me what I wanted. I told her, nothing, and hung up. I have never felt more disrespected and treated with contempt than I have from this business owner. I was in disbelief that she would treat me this way and figured there must be a misunderstanding and once she had a chance to go back and see that I did purchase food the previous day and I did pay for it using my debit card, she would call and offer an apology. As of 7-13-20 I have heard nothing and doubt that I will. Over a seven year period I have gotten take out orders and have taken dates there. As previously stated, my daughter loves the spaghetti there. I will now have to explain to her that we can no longer go there because they don't respect us there. Also, I would not want to spend my hard earned money in an establishment owned by someone who clearly has a lack of integrity...

The food is good, but the service can be frustrating. I recently ordered 2 pizzas. I called them in and I was told they would be ready in 25 minutes. I timed it spot on and walked in the door right at 25 minutes. I walked up to the register to pay for my order. The lady at the register asked for my name and I gave her my first name only. She read off a total that sounded correct and I paid. About 5 minutes went by and I asked another lady about my order. She said it would be out soon and that she told me over the phone it would be 25 minutes. I said I was aware of that but it had been 30 minutes and I just wanted to know how much longer it would be. She said the kitchen was backed up and it would be out shortly. Another lady brought out a couple bags and said here is your order. I told her that was not my order and that is when we realized she had charged me for someone else’s order. 15 minutes later I asked for an update on my order. I was told the same thing as before by a thin female with her hair pulled back tightly into a ponytail. She was pretty and told me I could wait in the waiting area by the front door. I told her that I didn’t want to go wait somewhere else, I simply wanted my food. As she started to walk away I said, “you know what”. She quickly spun around and snapped back, “you want to cancel your order?”. So I said yeah, let’s do that. She turned back around walked back into the kitchen. Another 3 or 4 minutes had passed and I was still waiting for someone to come refund my money. One of the original ladies I spoke with came out and said they would refund my money and the pizzas would be out any minute. By the time she was done refunding my money, the food was brought out. I haven’t ordered from here more than 5 times and twice they have forgotten to start my order. In the previous case they gave me a gift card for a free pizza. I wonder how much free food they give away because their employees drop the ball. Had they just been honest and said they hadn’t put in the order and offered a free appetizer to go with the meal, I would have been satisfied and they would have still made money on the pizza. The rude staff member should be fired. Keep in mind all of the dine-in customers could she...
