I’m a foodie who likes to try a different place every time. Yesterday found me at Ultra Kitchen, 7870 Culebra Rd #19, a location that specializes in West African/Nigerian/Afro-Caribbean Cuisine (description on their front door) Walked into a beautiful restaurant, with white table cloths, elegant tableware and long stem glassware. Clientele were mostly families with well behaved children. My dinner started off with an appetizer called Beef Suya. Thinly sliced beef marinated and served dusted with Yaji spice (ground peanut, cayenne, ginger, paprika, and onion powder). Garnished with sliced onion, cucumber and a piece of Puff-Puff (deep fried dough made with sugar and ginger). The spice and grilled meat were a flavor combination I had never experienced before. Every bite was captivating and I was sorry when it was gone. My main course was Egusi Soup with spinach. You choose 2 meats to include in your bowel. I chose the beef and fish (Cod). Egusi is a meal made from the dried and ground seeds of the Nigerian White Seed Melon. The soup is flavored with spinach and herbs that I’ve not tried before. It is slow cooked with pieces of meat including beef skin. The soup has the consistency of a thick porridge. It is served with a steamed bread called Fufu. Fufu is served hot and has the appearance of biscuit dough and a flavor of mashed potatoes. It is made from the Nigerian Yam. You tear off a piece of the Fufu and use it to pick up the Egusi with your fingers and pop it in your mouth. They provide cutlery if you’re not comfortable eating with your fingers. The food was one of the most unique and delicious meals I have EVER had. Please give this place a try. The service is friendly...
Read moreMy wife and I recently dined at Ultra Kitchen Restaurant and Catering, and we were blown away by the experience. From the moment we stepped in, we were immersed in the true essence of Nigerian opulence. The restaurant was neat and the atmosphere exuded warmth and authenticity.
The highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the food. Every dish was freshly made to order, bursting with authentic Nigerian flavors. As an appetizer, we couldn't resist trying the suya, and it did not disappoint. The flavors were bold and tantalizing, setting the perfect tone for the rest of our meal. I savored the Jollof rice with goat meat (it could have been more tender but absolutely delicious overall) and fried plantains, while my wife indulged in the Egusi with pounded yam. Each bite transported us to the heart of Nigeria. On another occasion, I had the pleasure of trying their goat meat pepper soup, and it was nothing short of phenomenal. It truly felt like a taste of home, comforting and satisfying in every way.
But what truly set Ultra Kitchen apart was the hospitality of the owners. They welcomed us like family, ensuring that we felt right at home from the moment we walked in. Their warmth and genuine care for their guests made our dining experience truly unforgettable.
Overall, Ultra Kitchen Restaurant and Catering exceeded our expectations in every aspect. From the impeccable cleanliness to the authentic flavors, and the welcoming hospitality of the owners, it's clear that they take pride in delivering an exceptional dining experience. We can't wait to return to San Antonio for more of their delicious Nigerian comfort meals. Highly recommended if you’re ever...
Read moreAwesome Nigerian food! The owners are also very friendly and took the time to talk to us when they saw that we were there for a Nigerian friend's birthday party but not all of us were accustomed to eating this style of food all of the time. They offered to explain if we had questions and were delighted to hear how much we enjoyed the food after we had eaten. I recall that the owners expressed that making this food and owning the restaurant is not just a job but a true "calling" to them, one which they are passionate about to the point that it does not even always feel like working, and I believe that really shows! Would highly recommend! The plantains were also DELICIOUS! Some of the best I've had. I will say that I have honestly had better jollof rice elsewhere, but Ultra Kitchen's is still very good. I think I should have asked for a higher spice level for my personal taste, and that probably would have helped significantly (I only ordered the "mild" spice level, and it was much, much softer than I was expecting. This is probably a good thing for most new people to African cuisine, but if you want more heat in your food, definitely go for a higher spice level). There was also a little bit of a weird issue with the dining room having multiple different songs playing at once, which was sort of weird for the atmosphere, but that could have just been an issue on the particular day we were there.
Overall, still excellent, my friends and I really enjoyed coming here for my friend's birthday, and I would highly recommend this restaurant, whether you love African food already or have never...
