Literally the best tacos in San Diego that I have had. Really fresh tortillas. Great specials. Drinks are to die for. Communial eating style so plan to go at an off time if you have a large party that you want to sit together. YOU CANNOT SAVE SEATS. Your entire party needs to order and then sit. It's not that big of a deal, just go expecting that, a word to any of you crybabies out there. I have went with 3 and 4 people at a time with no issue but the line is out the door, you order at register, then they bring you out your food. The long line adds to the experience in my opinion. I waited in line an hour for Extraordinary Desserts on Saturday at the Balboa location...just know that the best places have lines...and it adds to the fun. You can order To-Go. And I think you can call ahead too. Out door seating is available. Many people have brought their dogs and sat outdoors.
They have daily aguas frescas... beer...cocktails...love their vampiro michelada... it gets you full though. I have done all of their tacos, and their nachos, all great. I really like that they have lengua and meats other than just run of the mill carne asada...but they have all the "safe" stuff for the not so adventurous. I do not like San Diego style guac. It's too runny and flavorless for my taste, so if I had to say anything bad it would be that, but it's a preference. Their guac sauce is good though, ironically...which like most taco shops, they have a salsa bar, with limes, hot carrots, etc. I have never tried their shakes with the churro in it, but it looks so darn good. If I can ever get up after a night of drinking I will be stopping by on a Saturday or Sunday for menudo or posole.
The music is dusties style R&B...so expect to jam out to Al Green...and be mesmerized by the beautiful Chicano art on the wall. I have always had to park a block or 2 away when I go. But the cashier today was cute so it made up for it...I have never seen him before but I would go back just for him, he was very knowledgeable and friendly. I love this place. I reccomend it above all others. I have only tried the location on Logan. But it's a really rocking neighborhood on the weekend too, there are fun bars, and breweries in the area. The Iron Fist Brewing Company Tasting Room is right around the corner from Chicano Park so you can walk there also. I also have hung out and listened to bands at the bar across the way to Border X Brewing. They have a hibiscus beer there, if you are out at night then walk over for entertainment...they have a beer garden with a food cart in back too...(should I just review the whole neighborhood?)
Or you can visit Salud during the day and eat tacos for lunch, like I did today. Everyone is so friendly and is helpful explaining the menu. This place is good for locals and tourists, I brought my out of town visitors today. I think the area is great because there is a tremendous community pride here. Murals at Chicano Park are a hop-skip and a jump away, but there is also a gallery around the corner. The opportunity to pay homage to a rich culture and experience such an encompassing dining experience is really a privilege and a treat. You will see all walks of life at this eatery. Barrio-Logan Locals, hipsters, enlisted men and women and people from all over San Diego. It's really a gem. I'm from Chicago, we have the best food in all of the country, hands down 😎🤗😍 I know about good food, this place is good food-at a super reasonable cost, and a great environment. As you can see mostly positive reviews, the haters are out of touch and bitter....I have ONLY had good service and good food. And trust me...I give bad reviews when warranted. The energy is alive, come for date night, pick up tacos for the family, or even bring them in if you dont have super little ones, or make this your quick stop before going out for the night, just bring your mints cause your breath will be loaded...
Read moreToday (3-7-17) I visited Salud! at 2196 Logan Ave, San Diego, CA 92113
Today was Taco Tuesday at Salud. 3 of there tacos for $5. With 8 or more styles of tacos to choose from.
They open at 10am. I was 2nd in line at 9:50am. When the doors opened at 10:01am there were only 3 of us in line. I was 2nd to order and ordered up one breakfast taco, three Carne Asada tacos and three fish tacos. Hey I was hungry. Lol
I sat down at one of the bar style corner tops that faces Logan Ave and Sampson Street and enjoyed a nice cold Pacifico beer. There's was a nice cool gently breeze coming through the large window screens right in front of where I was sitting.
By 10:07am there was 13 people inside the place. I had my tacos brought out to me by 10:12am. By 10:20am there were 21 people inside ordering or already enjoying the tacos.
The movie La Bamba was playing on a large screen TV (no sound). Music was playing over the one large speaker mounted on the wall in the corner of the building where I was sitting. The music wasn't too loud and was enjoyable. The other times I have been here they have been playing oldies but today was reggae.
They have a fresh salsa bar with many of salsas to choose from. The tacos are so delicious there is really no need for the salsa unless you'd like some spice to your tacos.
The in house made corn tortillas are filled with the meat of your choice. The Carne Asada was delicious with carne asada, onions, cilantro, and guacamole. The fish tacos with cabbage, sauce and probably a few other ingredients I missed as I devoured them but they were was absolutely perfect.
The breakfast taco is my all time favorite but is not part of the 3 for $5 for Taco Tuesday, but I couldn't resist ordering one. The breakfast taco comes with a freshly made flour tortilla, an over easy egg, with bacon, chorizo and queso fresco, cheddar cheese and avocado.
By 10:40am it was me and 12 others inside. There were military personal from the local Navy base, people who were on an early lunch break and a lady who was just sitting at one of the bar style corners enjoying a book and the warmth of the sunlight coming through the window screen.
Are you looking to try some of the best tacos in San Diego? Well come on down to Salud! and give it a try. Just make sure you order enough tacos for your appetite because the line can at times get pretty...
Read moreThis review is for their catering service, not the restaurant. I've had a good experience at their restaurant so decided to use them to cater my girlfriends 40th birthday party. We went with the full service buffet option, carnitas and chicken at a cost of $560 plus fees and taxes , with a small side order of carne asada for an extra fee, total of around $800. On the day of the event two younger gentlemen, in high school, showed up and setup. The presentation was lackluster with food on two plastic tables, no table covering or awning, not like the pictures you see on the website. The kids were nice enough so this review has nothing to do with them
More importantly the carnitas I ordered, (which was half of the entire order, and the reason we went with SALUD ) never made it. I had a large hungry group of 40 people and it was very disappointing. I had confirmed the order 2 times and they still got it wrong. Instead of carnitas they brought extra carne asada by accident but the quantity they brought was not what we wanted, plus it was hardly edible and no one ate it. They pack leftovers in large ziplock backs and just hand it to you, but refuse to give tortillas, and provided no packaging for the leftover salsa so we had to bring out our own bowls and dump it in. It was just odd service and I wouldn't recommend it for a special event.
Mistakes happen but I'm more interested in how a business corrects it. Mind you I spent almost $800 plus $100 tip for food I didnt receive. I called the office asking for a refund on the missing carnitas, worth $270 on the contract. After a long back and forth that lasted 2 weeks, I accepted a much smaller refund of $150 just to be done with it. In summary 5 stars because they showed up on time, 0 for presentation, and 0 for quality of food, 0 for administrative service. It was nothing like their restaurant. Its a bummer because I have property in Barrio Logan and used to enjoy supporting SALUD but this experience left a bad...
