Went to Java Beach on Sloat. Incredibly rude cashier working at 3pm today. Did not catch her name... When I ordered my food, she was very snappy, dismissing and not informative. I asked her about soup choices and she pointed at a board and said tomato soup. Then continuously asked, “ what else? What else? What else?” 3-4 times. When I sat down a customer next to me had some other type of creamy white soup... so apparently there was something other than tomato soup. As I was drinking my coffee, I heard her complaining about homework assignments behind me. Towards the end of my meal, I asked her for a to go containers and she requested one of her male coworkers to assist me. Again, dismissing me and not letting me finish my sentence. Since I did not finish what I was initially asking for, she did not hear me say; I needed a to go coffee cup. I had to ask her again, and she responded; “for what?” I have worked in the cafe industry for years, I understand the balance of personal life and work can be tricky. However, letting a “few papers to write” impact your ability to give good customer service is ridiculous. Your the face of the cafe. At least pretend good customer service. Food...

I was here a year ago. The cafe itself is quiet and cozy, especially at 8 in the morning, as there were only a few people. But it could house up to probably six families of four to six, if need be.

The food itself is really good, well made and well served. I was surprised by just how large their sandwiches were, but then again, I'm not used to American sized food portions. My qualm actually lies with the pricing, as it's rather expensive (to me at least) at almost $16 a sandwich. And my hot chocolate drink was almost $6, but that's more forgiving.

IIRC, there's no Wi-Fi here and cellular reception is just enough for regular calls and text. So it may transport you back in time, which was nice, personally.

I can't speak for parking; I walked here. But it being across the zoo and next to the beach is nifty. Segway-ing to its restroom; it's roomy, clean, and well equipped.

Lastly, the cafe and the packaging its food comes in do have a lot of character and are...

Food prices went up 3-4 dollars for most items. Breakfast burrito was $11.00 at least last winter and it’s now $14.00. It’s a pretty tiny burrito. Subs used to be $15.75 now they are like practically $19. I don’t know what happened, did rent prices increase or have they decided to pay their workers a living wage? If either, a tiny burrito with a tortilla, an egg, cheese, and bacon does not cost $14.00. Charging customers an arm and a leg is not a good look. Maybe I am just poor! I might come back for a chai latte but this time my cup was half empty and half of it was foam?!?! See photo, you can see the liquid level. Whats going on? Food quality seems to decrease as food price increase. As the perception of quality increases with price. I should get food that tastes even better at a higher rate. Not...

A small place with lots of character... and very good breakfast food that we enjoyed while we waited fro the zoo to open. The almond croissant was not overly sugared or sweet, as so many of them are... and the bacon breakfast burrito had bacon that was actually crisp and thick, unlike the soft, mushy bacon often found in other breakfast burritos. The orange juice was fresh-made, the espresso was quite satisfying. The staff were friendly and busy at three same time. A steady flow of customers showed that this small place has built up a following.
