I ate here about a month ago and the food was acceptable with my main critique being I found the tortilla options a little limiting. My baja-style burrito was okay. This place doesn’t compare with some of the spots in the Mission but it isn’t a bad option if you’re in the Sunset/you don’t feel like making the trek into the city for your burrito.
To get to the point- I am primarily leaving this review to share my feedback on the beer I ordered with my meal.
The Beer (Standard Deviant hefeweizen): After noticing its somewhat non-standard appearance (it was quite transparent/clear for a hefe) I tasted it and immediately passed it to my father for a second opinion. Something was definitely off with this beer- with a noted undertone of dishwasher soap being tasted by both of us. In attempting to share this with our waitress she quickly stated ‘I am not of drinking age so I can’t comment of the flavor of the beer’. I found this response a bit questionable service-wise as it didn’t really resolve the customer’s situation so I continued explaining that a beer of this variety typically has distinctive details that were clearly not evident in the glass I was served. I did my best to explain that it was like I had ordered a glass of orange juice and got served apple juice instead- clearly something else visually (or so I thought).
Our waitress checked in with the bar and brought me a second glass after making sure the keg was correctly tapped. This second glass was almost identical to the first which threw me for a loop. It appeared I was wrong and that the beer had been served as intended.
I have been drinking hefeweizen as my go-to beer for some time wherever I can get it so I understand there is quite a range in quality/authenticity with this brew that has been around for hundreds of years and produced around the world with various different ways the flavor can vary. Admittedly, I haven’t tried Standard Deviant’s hefeweizen anywhere else however I am unlikely to based on this initial experience with it. I am not a professional brewer/restaurant owner but I wouldn’t call the beer I tasted that evening a hefeweizen. What I was served missed my expectation to a degree that I feel such this review is justified even just for this detail. I understand your cuisine is primarily Mexican-themed so the inclusion of a German wheat beer at the bar is done to give your customers options and it might not be the most mission-critical item on the menu but I definitely feel there is room for improvement here.
I want to close this review by emphasizing that it’s primarily written to share my feedback regarding the beer I ordered and how I didn’t recognize this beer as being correctly described. I am sharing my individual feedback that perhaps this specific offering might need to be reviewed: Does it sell well? When people order a glass of it do they immediately switch to a different beer for their next round? Might labelling it just as a ‘wheat beer’ give a more accurate description of it?
I am hoping that this review lands as a friendly notice of my individual opinion regarding the specific kind of beer I was served that evening and by no means should prevent someone from...
Read moreUpdated review: 5/13/2022: A lunch at Underdogs Too is a good way to start the weekend. I had the Pozole (pork stew) $12.50 and two Nick's way Baja fish tacos $17 + Negra Modelo $6. There were slight mishaps though. When my tacos first arrived, they were someone else's two taco order. It was a chorizo and a fish taco. Luckily I checked before eating them. Obviously I had to wait longer because they remade my order. That means another customer received my order. Oops. O wells. When my tacos finally arrived, I had to ask for more tomatoes (pico) as per my original order. Again, more waiting. That lunch rush might have caused the indoor dining room staff to mess up. Stuff happens.
Updated review 2/16/2022: We tried coming here a few Sundays ago but there was a line out the door just to get in. We decided to postpone our Underdogs visit to a weekday instead. Last night we had 2x Nick's way baja fish tacos $7.75 each, chorizo taco $6.50, steak taco $6.50, chips with salsa & guac $8.50, beans and rice $2.50 and pints of refreshing beer. My friend and I were arguing which is better, Underdogs' full bar and beer selection or the delicious food that their kitchen puts out. On one hand, there's always new exciting beers to try here. On the other hand, we noticed their meats are always very savory with authentic spices. O, I almost forgot to mention their green and red sauce bottles on the table. Regardless, their staff should get a lot of credit because the bartenders are awesome, waitstaff super attentive and the kitchen crew are just plain wonderful. My only regret is that I need a bigger stomach to fit more of their tacos. One minor nit pick though. Did their chips get harder? I realized the roof of my mouth was all cut up after eating a few chips. Maybe I ate it too fast again.
Original review: Underdogs Too is more than a predominant sports bar. I love the lively atmosphere, the friendly staff, great bartenders, plenty of TV's and awesome chefs/menu. This location is less crowded than their 9th Ave. location and easier to get a seat. Tonight, I got my usual Nick's way tacos $13.70 and a beer $7. That first bite into a Underdogs taco is very delicious. The fish taco had both a soft and a crispy tortilla wrapped around a generous piece of fried fish, from what I could tell, cabbage, cilantro and guacamole. The al pastor taco had the same shell/guacamole but with more diced tomatoes. You can't beat that rich smokey flavor of the al pastor. Both were very good. They are perfect without the two squeeze bottles of brown or green sauce. Although, the last few bites, I tend to squeeze just a little on the tacos to mix it up. Instead of chips, I do prefer the little side of beans and rice. Great job everyone at Underdogs Too. My friends and I...
Read moreBeen to underdogs a few different times, pre covid and post the fire and have to say, the food has always been just OK but the service is the WORST I've ever experienced! As a sunset resident, its convenient for us which is the only reason we've continued to go back.
Previously being a server as well, ive often thought it could have been an off night for our server, we are all human and go through things, but today truly crossed the line. We have a 15 month old daughter and asked for a table for 2 plus a high chair. The server who attended to us laughed and said "we don't have high chairs, it's been requested but no one seems to want to do anything about it". Note that we had been there 3 months back and were told that they didn't have high chairs due to supply chain issues. Which at the time, we understood, but 3 months later, we assumed they found a solution to the problem, like going out and buying some from a store, where they are available.
But then, a waitress came over and asked if there was an issue. When she heard about the problem, she smuggly replied "you can just hold her". To which we didn't reply, but felt so disrespected we choose to leave. Besides the fact that expecting me to hold onto my wiggly toddler wasn't how I wanted to spend my time at dinner, I sincerely believe that, that is just not how you speak to your customers.
This evening, the owners and management team happened to be having a meeting outside while this all happened and when they asked what was wrong, I told them and again, NOT ONCE, was my concern met with a "we are sorry". When I even mentioned that ikea sells high chairs for $25, they laughed and said "yea those would be destroyed in min." With this type of response it's clear why the staff is so comfortable being dismissive of their patrons. I hope underdogs sees this post and learns something and tries to do better in the future.
We won't be returning and I'd recommend that other families with small kids stay away as well. They clearly don't want our kind...
