On my way back from Hilda's, I passed by Pacitas and did a double take. Salvadorean? Perhaps they have quesadilla salvadoreña? A quick glance of their Yelp rating later, and I decided to pop in and pick up one of the smaller wheels they had, ignoring all the other pastries they had to offer.
So, why this in particular? I spent my summers in El Salvador as a child, and quesadilla salvadoreña was, by far, my favorite pastry from my time there. The ones that Pacitas make aren't bad by any means, with a good mix of savory and sweet, but a little on the dry side. Tossing them onto a non-stick skillet for a few minutes does wonders, giving it a slightly nicer toast, but also moistening up the slice a bit with the steam from the cheese.

Venue - A smaller, but not tiny, U-shaped bakery, with the width to fit about two wheelchairs, if that. Counters are of the slightly lower variety, so seeing all their offerings shouldn't pose a problem, though coming here when it's crowded might be a minor nuisance.

Read moreA wonderful little bakery where you can pick up a box of baked treats for a just a few of your hard earned dollars. The tres leches slices are moist and delicious and will set you back all of $1.50. The cake is homestyle, so don't expect fancy slices with chocolate shavings and whipped cream florets. The much lauded guava cookies (pasteles) are indeed wonderful and are the size of a hockey puck and filled with sweet/tart guava jelly surrounded by a shortbread like crust with a delicate crumb. They will set you back less than $1.
The people that work there are as sweet as the pastries. Parking isn't easy, but might as well make a trip out of it and grab some other delicious eats in the area. The Excelsior is the best remaining ethnic food paradise in this...
Read moreGuava marmalade filled pastry & Tamales!! That's what you want to get at this Salvadorian bakery. There was a long line outside when we went & that's typical. We ended up trying 6-7 different types of cookies & pastries. Our favorites were the Guava, Pineapple marmalade puffs, orange cookie, and the Tamales. Go in with a list of items you want, the people waiting outside generally know what they want & can be an impatient bunch - rightly so, who wants to wait longer in line :) Worth a try, give it a go whenever you're...
