Terrible experience here the service was bad and unsanitary.. Do not eat here the servers are not worried about your health.. I ordered a sandwich and everything was fine the guy was doing everything correct until he put my bread and meat in the oven.. While waiting on the sandwich to toast the phone started ringing and with the gloves he had on to make my sandwich he answered the phone grabbed pins and post it pads took a order with the pin hung the phone up never changed gloves and went right to touch my sandwich and stick his dirty hand in the lettuce.. I asked him if he was going to change his gloves with an attitude he ignored me and said lettuce and tomato right.. I said so you are not even going to listen to me.. He then says do you want it or not? Very rude I said hell no now that u put germs all over it.. The manager told him to make me another one and instead of merely changing gloves he goes and touches the other loaves of bread with the same dirty gloves with a serious attitude like I'm wrong for not wanting germs on my sandwich.. When he did that I was about to walk out and the owner said he would make my sandwich for me and he did very sanitary. However I will not be returning to eat there and I advice you not to either. There are great sanitary sandwich places in SF like Roxie's and Pop's don't support a place that does not value there customers health. Even Safeway sandwich makers change there gloves constantly.. Don't support sub center west portal little Mexican dude is filthy and nasty in there making sandwiches.....
Read moreThis sandwich place has been a city favorite for decades. I've lived in the neighborhood for almost 30 years and my kids (now 22 and 25) cite this as one of their favorite sandwich eateries. It's small, with just a few tables (the ambiance for eating is so-so), but the hot sandwiches are quite yummy. I've stood in line with folks who took public transit from across the city to buy several sandwiches that they take back across the city. (But I think they are best eaten while still warm.)
I'm a vegetarian, and I always order the "center vegetarian". They have only one sort of bread, cut to three lengths. ("Center" is the medium length.) This sandwich contains cheese, melted, avocado, cucumber, onion, mayo, mustard, and their "special sauce", which is some kind of vinaigrette. I don't think they have much to offer vegans, since all sandwiches contain cheese and/or meat.
They provide a rack of chips, and a variety of drinks. They also have soup, which I've never tried, and I've never seen anyone else try. They don't offer desserts, but I wish they had cookies or something similar. They make the sandwich in front of you, and you can customize.
I usually eat my sandwich at home but, if the weather is nice, there's a park on top of the metro tunnel and the West Portal library, next door, has a...
Read moreBest pastrami sub, ever! My favorite local place for a hot pastrami with cheese, closed down during the pandemic. A friend told me about Submarine Center. They featured a hot pastrami with cheese but with shredded lettuce and tomato. I wasn't sure about putting veggies in with my pastrami and cheese but decided to have their super sized version, delivered, as it was pouring rain. By the time I got done with tax, tip and the Door Dash delivery charge, I was in for $25 and change! Sub Center is not cheap but their quality is top notch. That sub sandwich was awesome and the lettuce and tomato added another set of flavors I didn't know I missed! What also made the sandwich worth every penny, is their secret sauce. Idk what's in it but it sure is mighty tasty! I've been back for pick up, many times since then but occasionally still pay for Door Dash delivery because their pastrami and cheese sub is just...
