Fortune Bakery — Restaurant in San Gabriel

My family has ordered two different cakes from Fortune Bakery and both have been decent, although after this recent one, I'm not sure if I'd order the vanilla cake again. This bakery is popular for the chocolate banana cake - which I had tried and fell in love with. And the price was extremely cheap for an 8" with almonds! I believe it was $20.

At first I thought ... chocolate banana? That doesn't sound very appealing in a cake. But, it was amazing! The chocolate cake wasn't too dense, but it wasn't like the Asian bakery cakes either. It was more of a homemade, cake-mix texture, but a little more high end and superior. The cake is more sponge-y and firm, and with the whipped cream and bananas, it tasted really good. I would say it's more along the lines of an American bakery - better than cakes at the supermarkets. And adding almonds was a great idea; it was just $2, but definitely worth it as it cake the cake extra flavor and gave the whipped cream an extra kick.

Because my family enjoyed the cake so much, we decided to try the vanilla strawberry cake. Eight inches with almonds - it only came in one standard size (no option of a double layer cake that the chocolate banana one offered). When I opened the box, I had thought the cake was already a double layer because it was so tall! It wasn't. Unfortunately after cutting into the cake, we had to big layers of cake and a very thin layer of cream with barely any strawberries in the middle. There were perhaps less than a dozen whole strawberries in the whole cake .. maybe 8! That was disappointing. But I didn't really enjoy the vanilla cake as much as I liked the chocolate. The cake was the same texture as the chocolate one, but for some reason it just didn't taste very good. It had a muffin/cupcake taste to it. Very homemade-y but this time, it didn't taste as high end as the chocolate one. Because the cake is pretty heavy, I can see how they use it to absorb the milk to make tres leche cake. But the taste was very plain and ordinary and even though I didn't mind that it wasn't soft or fluffy, it just wasn't right for me or my family. We all ended up not liking the vanilla too much. The cream was the same as the chocolate, but due to the crumbly/spongy cake, it didn't add much to the taste.

The shop is not too new, but because they are popular for their cheaply priced cakes, they do have lots of business. The store has lots of toys inside. Not sure if they're for sale or if the owner enjoys collecting them, but they do make for an odd storefront. Lots of cupcakes, baked goods, sugar-free goods, cookies inside the display case. There are also premade, ready to buy cakes that you can purchase if you're in a hurry or didn't get an order in. The owner was not too friendly, but well - it's just about the cake!

I'd recommend the chocolate banana cake, but not the vanilla strawberry. I do want to try a few other cakes from Fortune Bakery, so I would come back! Street parking since Fortune Bakery is...

Fortune Bakery in San Gabriel has been around since back in the day. We have steered away for quite a few years. But, I return to the scene of the crime.lol! Aka the Barrio and ordered a White Chocolate Mousse 🍰. Made with buttercream frosting, and had the Almond Slices around the outside of the cake.Our Son is a Star wars fan, so we had them put 2 Star Wars head figurines on it and write, Happy Birthday Jesse on it. So,, for those of you that went away from this little Gem of a place..... please come back and rediscover this awesome, delicious, and wonderful place. This is my all time favorite bakery 🧁 joe and his family have always made every occasion more than special it was delicious. Over the top blend of flavors and the whip cream frosting is Unbelievably awesome.

For 20 years, i supported this bakery by ordering cakes nearly every month for birthday celebrations at work. My employees still call me for the number to order fortune.
