We got lucky that the ballet show ("Alice in Wonderland" by Pasadena Civic Ballet) we went to wasn't super full. The tickets that I purchased, the entire row of seats we had to ourselves and half the showing was empty so it wasn't too crowded. Definitely had a comfortable show. Restroom usage was fine since there was a lot of stalls provided (although don't know how'd it fare when it's a busier show). They provided paid self-parking at $10.00 a car. Or you can try your luck at finding a free parking spot around the mission area.
I will admit that I thought the playhouse smelled and felt a little dated (not so much how it was designed, rather some things were falling apart). Some of the seats were ripped and kind of stained looking and the building smelled stale. There was also no eating inside (we didn't know) and had brought a cookie inside, but were reprimanded by the the usher (respectively, we apologized and put my cookie away). I really wished they would enforce that rule, if your'e going to lecture me about it then make sure no one else is bringing in food too. There was a family behind us that were opening chips, popcorn and cans of soda the entire show, it was hella rude and noisy AF.
Also, would be nice to enforce late comers to come in only during intermission. Having large bodies block out the stage again and again after the ballet show has started is also...
Read moreThe SG Mission Playhouse is an old performing arts theatre built by John McGroaty in 1927. The stage can house up to 150 cast production. The architecture of the playhouse has Spanish, Indian and Mexican influences. The 1,387 seat theater has Native American influences in its painted and carved ceiling. Replicas of Spanish lanterns used aboard galleons in the 1800s hang from the ceiling. Woven tapestries that were a gift from King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1927 adorn the sides of the theater. The theater is home to a fully restored 1924 Wurlitzer pipe organ originally built for the Albee Theatre in Brooklyn, New York. Furthermore, the playhouse was very popular in the early 1900’s and was officially acquired by the city of San Gabriel in 1945. They have a wide variety of events such as Broadway shows, talent competition, outreach performance, independence shows, fiestas, etc. The event I went to the ticket price was $25. Parking lot is huge. Overall, this is one of the many historic and beautiful theatre playhouse in...
