I have just discovered a brick & mortar Curry Up Now for the first time. I haven't had Curry Up Now in nearly 10 years, not since I had a tikka masala burrito at OTG. These days, the franchise also has bars, catering service, and more trucks. I was impressed with the modern interior, with marble tabletops and leather seats. There are also a few tables outside as well. I was even more impressed with the menu, a multitude of share-ables, fusion-ish plates, burritos, fried things, and sweet things. They've come a long way from the simple OTG menu. At first I was a little confused about how to order. There is a cashier person. You can also order at the iPad station, grab one of those coaster-sized beepers, and enter in the beeper number.
Chicken Naughty Naan - flatbread of kulcha naan, cheese, caramelized onions, shaved jalapeno, w/ side salad: If ever there was an attempt to make a pizza with Indian flavors and textures, this would be it. It arrived on a wooden board, and oh boy was it heavy. The naan was thick and chewy, and super cheesy. The chicken and onion-y sauce was just a tad spicy. The accompanying side salad helps to lighten up it up a bit.
Guac Sev Puri - crisp papdi chips, guacamole, hot sauce: I believe this is one tasty version of elevated chips and guac. Each guacamole ball is very generous and sits on top of very sturdy papdi. Just one drop of hot sauce is enough to give it some spicy tang. For a few small bites, this was also on the heavy side.
Pani Puri - hollowed semolina puri, potato garbanzo mash, cumin tamarind water: I expected pani puri to have fried balls with open tops, so the flavored water can be poured into it. However these fried, hollow puffs were fully closed. I cracked them open with a spoon and filled each with a little bit of the garbanzo mix, then poured a bit of the cumin tamarind water into it. Crunchy, savory, and yummy. You definitely need to just pop them into your mouth before the water disintegrates the puri.
Kathi Roll w/ aloo gobi - egg washed housemade flatbread, onions, chutney, w/ chips: Its thin, soft flatbread (paratha?) with spicy potato mixture is a carb on carb meal.
Kathi Roll w/ chicken - egg washed housemade flatbread, onions, chutney, w/ side salad: The chicken kathi roll is just as good, but a little more satisfying since the meat balances out the flatbread.
The inventive dishes and creative play on more traditional Indian dishes here are fun to try. In my opinion, some of the dishes have more toned down flavors compared to more traditional Indian restaurants. So this is probably a great option for people who appreciate Indian food but may not be able to stomach stronger spices. Service is not bad, but could be a little better. At one point, they forgot our drinks, and then they ended up just grabbing us the mango lassi that was in the display case the entire time. All in all, I had a good experience trying dishes here a...
Read moreI have been a regular custom at Curry up now Oakland and I love that place. In our office, we regularly order from there. On this note I wanted my family to try Curry up now but I live in San Jose, Hence we ordered some food from Curry up now San Jose ( Thinking the food and service will be good). I went to pick up the order. I called the waitress (she was nice) and asked if I have my order ready. She said if your name is there then pick up the parcel.
There were 2 packets ( One with my Frist name and one with my Last Name). I dint pay much attention to the details and picked both. This was my mistake, I should have seen the details. The waitress asked if both are your parcel I said yes as it had my name. I just took them and in a few minutes, I got a call saying I took someone else parcel, I stopped the car and saw the details. Someone else has the same last name. I should have seen the details. As I was not far away I told her I am sorry and I will come to return the parcel.
I entered the restaurant again, there was a guy who works there ( not sure if he is a manager or owner) he asked are u the one waitress called? I said yes. He started interrogating me as though I were a thief( NOT OK). My 5-year-old was behind him. I had to answer my kid and explain it later. I returned the parcel to the waitress and told her sorry ( she was still nice). Took the food home, but the food had gone bad (it tasted sour, oily, and questionable). Half the curry was oil. Only deconstructed Samsosa was fine. The rest of the food had to go to the trash. This is a place with bad food and customer service. Never again. Bad food can be forgotten, not bad customer service.
I understand that I mistakenly took both parcels, They could have asked me to pay for the other one, instead treating me like thief was not at all ok. When I pay money for food ( which was gone bad) with TIPS the decent thing they can do is hand me over my parcel. Or right full name. I am not a deliver girl to go pick up myself and be...
Read moreThe food was absolutely delicious—flavorful and truly finger-licking good! I ordered the American Punjabi Thali, and I must say, the quality was excellent. It was beautifully presented, and the portion size was satisfying. No complaints there—it was a complete meal for me. Five stars for the food!
However, I had to deduct two stars due to the service. My friend and I ordered separately but received the same table number. While enjoying our meal, we noticed that each order included a complimentary tea. When we requested ours, they served just one tea and asked us to share. Their reasoning? "If there were five people at a table, we would provide only two teas." That’s absurd! If a group of five colleagues dined together, they'd have to debate over who gets the tea? Either honor what's advertised or remove the complimentary tea from the menu altogether.
I also understand that the restaurant follows a street food theme, which explains the aluminum plates. No problem with that. But cleanliness is non-negotiable. My plate, though covered with paper, had noticeable calcium deposits all around the edges. It was quite unappetizing to look at while eating.
Hope these issues are addressed because the food truly deserves a flawless experience!
Response from the owner 4 days ago Hi There Pasupathy. We offer 1 free chai with 1 item ordered. Were you not offered this? No Sir. We were not. As mentioned, we were asked to share the same tea as we opt to use a single table number for both...
