El Grullo Restaurant — Restaurant in San Jose

For context I am not Latina and am no authority on Latin culture or food however I have been coming here for near 30 years for Burritos and Taco’s and can only speak to those items but will say the varieties of meat and seafood dishes are amazing.

So I always order the super burrito with everything and pastor and my wife orders the super and regular tacos and we order fries on the side.

They always serve house made nachos and salsa while you wait for your order and let me tell you this very simple nacho and salsa is phenomenal. No one makes a better house salsa and having cut and deep fried tacos for nacho chips is the best. There’s no substitute. They also serve ice cold water while you wait for your food.

Now the food. All the ingredients are fresh and generous yet the ratio of ingredients is done to perfection and done so consistently every time we come no matter what day or time. They are generous with their meat the avocados (a whole avocado) and they don’t overwhelm you with rice and beans. The other ingredients like onions and greens complement each dish beautifully.

The meats are not oily and don’t flood your hands and mouth when you eat. The house sauce is delicious and each table has seasonings and other common sauces if preferred. Each table also has napkins that are never empty.

The service is exceptional and in Spanish yet they know enough English to complete an order. With me they already know what I want so all is well.

Come here for freshly prepared and clean food. Always delicious and never any after taste issues due clean ingredients. The oil they use is always fresh and never old.

This place always satisfies and brings me joy for almost 30 years.

One last thing. The restroom is always clean, could use an update but...

UPDATE 6/10 same scenario different day. They forget items then have the nerve to ask if I paid for the item. The order comes with tortillas and door dash doesn’t let you continue ordering if you don’t make a choice of corn or flour tortillas. They forget to bag the item then the tortilla police asks if I paid for them and makes me wait til she helps people in line. Trying to explain it’s paid is another few minutes. Update your door dash options, make sure everything is in the bag before saying yes and have one person who speaks English on these shifts to help us customers for situations like this. I tried to show her my receipt from door dash but I didn’t think she could read it.

Food is good but the workers have an attitude everytime. I always use door dash for my pick ups to not interact with them for that reason. I would love to say hey they had a bad day and let it slide but nope it’s been consistent. They also always forget an item which is frustrating. I will be checking the bag now. Spanish speaking only here as well. Took 3 girls to try and understand me once and the girl I was first talking to walked away because she couldn’t understand me. Good food but the CUSTOMER service and respect needs to be worked on big time. The place looks really nice now and to be forgetting items that come with the meal is annnoying. I probably won’t be ordering from here unless I’m craving it. They forgot an item again last night after saying it was in there. Check before you leave. I guess my fault for asking and believing...

Update: may 16 2019 Went in today cause I was craving the Tacos de papa, prices are so ridiculous now. A breakfast burrito $15???? My tacos used to be about $7 now they are $10. And they tasted better before. No flavor now. Everything went up about $3. They no longer have large milkshakes which is what I always about. Now it's a small size (they say its regular) that costs like $5. This is not it guys.

Old review: Service was lousy. Food was OK but overpriced. I used to love coming here but I don't know what happened. Food prices increased, taste isn't as good. Even the shakes are not good. And service has gotten bad. The waitress was friendly with the two guys sitting in the table in front of us, but when it came to us she was a bit rude. Food was handed to us in the air, as in we had to take it from her hands and put it on the table. While with those guys she delicately put the plates in front of them. She constantly checked on them and just ignored us. We didn't get refills on anything. This is why I always tip great waitresses. They deserve it, they make you feel welcome and make you want to visit again. But when you get a bad server it ruins your entire experience. And she was definitely not worth tipping.
