Mexico Bakery popped up as the first result when searching for Mexican Bakeries in San Jose on Yelp. I decided to give it a try as it had a near perfect rating from almost 900 reviews. It is located in the eastern edge of the city so its not in the best part of town, but the location is not as sketchy as some of the other areas on the east side. There is a small parking lot in the front so parking is not an issue. At the peak lunch hour on a Saturday the place seemed pretty full with a line 5 people deep in front of the ordering station which is too your left when you enter. The baked goods and cakes are in the long display to your right. I did not see any anyone behind these displays so I skipped these items and got in line. I decided to get the Torta Milanesa ($8.50) which is fried breaded beef steak, to-go with everything. The lady behind the cash register spoke decent English so I did not face any issues during ordering. After ordering I had to wait for around 15 minutes before I got my order. Here you get an order number but unfortunately the numbers are called out in Spanish so like me if you can’t speak Spanish it is a bit of a hassle. The good news is that orders are processed in order that they are received so if you track the person in front of you, you would know when you are up. It would be a lot easier if they simply called out numbers in Spanish and English, but that is too much to ask here. I got a huge and I mean huge torta which had almost 3 layers of milanesa. This had to be the largest torta that I’d had in my life. The one word to describe it would be terrific. The only negative that I can think of is that it was a little heavy on the salt and it had a little too much Avocado for my taste so next time I’ll skip the Avocado. Price wise it was slightly more than what you would pay for a burger in Five Guys so I’d say that it was in line with what you would pay for a comparable item in the area. Looking at the overall package or service, quality and value for money, Mexico Bakery definitely has me down as a fan. Hopefully I will figure out how to order the baked goods and try some of those and update my review at that time.

I’ve known about three locations around San Jose, and this location has been by far the most popular, yet, most convenient from my house. Though the plaza is small, it is bustling with people coming in and out of the different stores, and Mexico Bakery happens to be one of those panaderías where you just can’t get enough. They have a wide array of selections, from pan, to aquas frescos, to atole and champurrado (in the winter), to much more. However, the one season that I enjoy the most is when they make the Rosca de Reyes for Día de Reyes (also known as “Day of the Kings”). Fun fact: did you know that every single rosca they make is ACTUALLY from scratch? Makes for a reason why they’re so popular, especially when it’s on a holiday. In addition, their arroz con leche is one of the BEST in the region — probably better than the ones they sell at the supermercados in Eastside. Infused with raisins and bits of cinnamon that you can still taste, it melts RIGHT in with the milk and it’s so delicious that you simply can’t get enough of it. The people who work at this location are VERY nice and very helpful — and they create a sense of community for newcomers and regular customers. This has become not only my partner’s favorite panadería to come to when he comes to San Jose, but it’s also become my favorite panadería as well when I want more cheaper, affordable, yet sweet options. A lot of people say that the atmosphere at Mexico Bakery is not really in its best condition — but in my opinion, they do a fine job of keeping everything clean in front of the store and at the counter as well.

The Food When a friend sends you a picture of a giant sandwich and says "I would like a review". You bet I'll go and get the giant sandwich and do a review. I didn't know Mexico Bakery was a place until that day, and definitely did not know there's a giant sandwich. The giant sandwich refers to torta, which in this context is a sandwich. I order their combinada (combination) with 2 carnes (2 meats) with asada (beef) and cubana (cuban). But there's more, it comes with meat chili (sloppy joe?), egg, avocado, and an array of vegetables. When I say the sandwich was big, I mean it was as big as my face. I can't even fit it into my mouth. Even though it is like $16, it was not a bad deal. The only gripe I have was that the beef was dry and tough to chew, otherwise it was pretty good. The bakery has a variety of other selections, from pastries to desserts. Would like to return to check out their other items. The Miscellaneous The bakery is in a quite spacious plaza, with plenty of parking. The inside itself is not super big, but still decent sized. There seemed to be a small amount of seating before, but of course now is all take out. They have a straightforward menu you can order from, but many of the selection on display is not on the menu itself. The combine selection from the menu and display is quite extensive with many items. The prices are not bad, pretty reasonable.

If you ever are in San Jose you MUST go and eat at this place. OMFG! The tortas and the bread are sooooooo good, believe me you won't be disappointed!!!! As a vegan, well I got all veggies and beans, and it was delicious & the tortas are huge!!!! If you are a big eater like my husband you might be able to finish one if not, you will only be able to finish half!!!! My husband, my mother and my oldest daughter, tried the chicken which is asado, and mom and husband LOVED IT!!!! The amount of meat, veggies, cheese and everything else is just a lot!!! Also, they tried the asada which also they LOVED IT. The Cubana, which my mother did not like that much same as my husband. He said is more like a breakfast sandwich. Milanesa was good too and the cheese on the grill was extremely good. I tried different of the breads and were absolutely YUMMY! And if you are lucky like my mom and I, the baker will bring a tray with bread that just come out of the oven and you can pick any for FREE!!!!! They also have Champurrado which was delicious. They have natural juices, made by order nothing from the store, same as licuados with fresh fruits. They also have tons of different cakes. I mean the first time you went there it was graduation week and the place was busy I mean you had to be in line a really long one. I mean no joke you will be in line for several minutes and same with the waiting but it will be worth it!!!!! Since our first time, we had been 4 times more and we are 1+ hour far away from the place!!!! My husband said there are two bakeries but we went to the one by Tully Rd. You have to try this gigantic...
