Trung Nguyen Legend is one of the most popular cafes in Vietnam from Dalat. I went to a location in Saigon but they were out of Ca Phe Trung that day. After opening a location in Orange County last year, they opened two new locations this July in San Jose in Vietnamtown and at Silvercreek/Capitol Expressway. They specialize in Ca Phe Sua Da (Vietnamese Iced and Hot Coffee) and Ca Phe Trung (Egg Coffee).

The location in Vietnamtown has a big patio and about 10 tables inside with a retail shop for drinkware and coffee & phin (Viet dripper) gift sets. It gets very busy during the weekend, 30-45 min wait for drinks. I’ve had some difficulty ordering because their English is limited and the menu is complicated. So double check your receipt to make sure you get your coffee for dine-in, otherwise you might get your expensive coffee in a paper to-go cup. The presentation is really nice, as it is served to you on a wooden tray with the coffee dripping in the phin that you pour over a glass full of ice. You also get a small glass pitcher of condensed milk which you can add to your own personal taste.

The Ca Phe Sua Da and Trung are both smooth and good quality. Many people rating it low think the drinks are overpriced. Yes, the most expensive options are $13.95 for the Zen or Ottoman sets and I wouldn’t order them either. But there are much less expensive options such as the Creative Energy set for $7. I got to stop by here with my parents this past Friday around 3 pm. I think because of the rain, it wasn't too crowded! And unexpectedly, it was also during the hours of their happy hour.

Taking advantage of their happy hour, I grabbed one hot and one cold of their The Breakthrough Energy and a Vietnamese Coffee with Sea Salt Cream, and a pandan waffle! Pro-tip: pay in cash for 4% off!

The setup of the traditional Vietnamese coffee was pretty neat. I like that it's clearly the shop's pride and joy to provide an authentic experience. Despite this, I would argue that it was fairly pricey for how little actual drink you get. Though, it was STRONG.

If you're not looking for any frills, the other side of the menu (like the Vietnamese coffee with sea salt cream) had almost twice the volume of drink.

I was also a bit disappointed with how small the Pandan waffle was. For only $3, I inhaled the thing in under a minute. Maybe I should've taken advantage of their deal of buy 3 get one free...

Overall, I have no regrets of coming here. It was a fun experience. Would I come back? Perhaps on another random day during happy hour, but I don't think I would go out of my way to try again.
