Great recreational course. Nice formal setup with signs, tees and Mach baskets. Too bad the Parks and Recreation got greedy with the parking fee. Six dollars in too much for the disc golf Demographic. No research was done to establish a realistic charge for parking. Most disc golfers are young men and younger families in the working class, not the rich and famous from more endowed zip codes. The lack of amenities on site further challenges the higher fee. The property was abandoned used by homeless folks until recently and it will be years before vegetation is fully restored.
If the fee was dropped to $4 you would double the amount of park users or better while increasing your revenue from attendance, $3 is more realistic. The world class course at DeLaveaga Wilderness Park in Santa Cruz charges only $2 daily. Many parks charge nothing to park or have off site parking. The higher fee certainly impacts my plans to patronize Kelley Park.
One solution to better serve San Jose and Bay Area resident disc golfers is to offer a reasonable annual parking sticker, $50 a year let's say rather than the current amount. Forms should be available on site to purchase...
Read moreKelly park or Japanese Friendship park is one of San Jose city favorite among its residents and overall people who get the privilege to visit. Unfortunately during my visit I was sad to see that the ponds that for years were filled with water and Koi fish were empty. Almost like an abandoned feeling. According to some of the signs, the city of San Jose is working hard to restore this area after a tragic flood years ago that contaminated the waters of the Koi fish ponds. This park is kept very clean, all their landscaping seems healthy and well taken care of. There is still a small pond with some Koi fish, but no food available for the public to feed the fish. This park does charge a fee of 6 dollars per parking ticket. The city of San Jose is accepting donations to help restore this beautiful family park, amazing memories for years in the hearts of many and so devastating to see what it...
Read moreI visited the Kelley Park in November of 2019 and have recently learned that it is also known as History Park and History San Jose, those other names were more familiar to me. Rather than trying to unravel the mystery (for me at least), I will focus on my experience and impressions.
Visiting The Kelley Park was indeed a revelation and an educational experience for me. The Park was well laid out and the grounds well kept which encouraged exploration. To better appreciate the park and it many sights and items of historic significance an overview talk was given by the staff member.
Exploration was encouraged and yes I definitely recommend the "Talk" in order to have a better experience. I would not give any spoilers but sufficing to say that it is well...
