Sistas Soul Food Kafe — Restaurant in San Leandro

It was my birthday, and I wanted some good, down home soul food. Gave these wonderful people a shot, and I'm so glad I did! First of all, it's a little hole-in-the-wall place adjacent to the Safeway parking lot, which is THE BEST type of restaurant in my opinion. You walk in the door, and it smells like real, down home soul food. For a second, I thought my mother was still alive! The food? Oh my, let me tell you about the food. I ordered the chicken strips with collards, and fries. THE COLLARDS!! It is worth going there for the collards, alone!! Everything else was equally fabulous. The chicken was authentically "soul food". Season perfectly, as opposed to the overseasoning many chicken places employ. My partner got the chicken as well and also loved it! However, my partner got the jalapeno Mac and cheese and the garlic mashed potatoes as sides. Let me tell you: I HATE Mac and Cheese!! However, THIS Mac and Cheese was insanely good, and I'll order it for myself next time. The garlic mashed potatoes? Just stop. There was so much flavor, between those two sides, that I ended up eating some of my partner's sides, as well! But wait!! I forgot about the cornbread!! It was moist yet flakey, and simply delicious. (my only gripe, here, is that the portion is a little small. Or, maybe that's just a "me" thing.) Knowing it was my birthday, these lovely ladies gave me a slice of their banana cream cake. Oh. My. So I went in to sista soul cafe today and order the smothered turkey wings for my sides I got cabbage and string beans and potatoes. For my other order I got the 8pc catfish and for the sides I got the cabbage and potato salad this order was for my mom . My meal for the smothered turkey wings was okay I was expecting to have potatoes in my string beans it took me a min to find them , but I did since they are cut in a flatter shape like smothered potatoes would be cut another thing is my string beans taste like yams very sweet like they were soaked in sugar my cabbage was shredded cabbage I was expecting cabbage to be cut up and cooked prepared for the day instead I got cabbage from a bag tossed in a skillet and fried. Now to my smothered turkey wings the meat was a little tough I took bite out of one and was chewing on the meat like gum. For the cat fish it was fried to perfection and didn’t taste fishy like some other restaurants I’ve been to , but the cabbage is the same and for the potato salad was okay needs a balance to it . The chef in the back was very polite and was working very hard by herself and as quickly as she can since she was by her self cooking and pushing out all the orders , but there shouldn’t be one chef in the back working and preparing. OMG! On my way to fix a broken nail and happened to see this place for the first time. Pulled over and went in to check it out. Wasn't really planning to eat there but the soul music got me dancing and the owner offered me some free samples. When I asked her what I could have, she gave me 4 choices. She brought me gumbo, macaroni and cheese, and the most delicious and well-seasoned catfish. An hour later when I said that I needed to drag myself out of there, she said "before you drag yourself out you have to taste this banana pudding cake!" I did and like every other sample it was AWESOME. I immediately started texting my friends to tell them about this amazing find! And will return with some of them after the first with plenty of money to try more items. Don't walk, RUN to this spot, and enjoy the homey atmosphere, great playing music and true Southern hospitality on the Oakland/San Leandro border. Open Wed-Saturday 5pm to midnight. Sundays from 1-9 pm. Yes, they are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Oh I forgot, ALL THE DESSERTS ARE HOMEMADE!!! Make sure u check out the reasonabley priced dinners for 4 people. What a deal!
