Umai Sushi — Restaurant in San Marcos

Had lunch w a good friend every Friday there for about a year. I still go there every now and then. I used to love this place, the servers were attentive, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was pleasant. I don't know if it's the new management but this place isn't what it used to be.

About 2 weeks ago, I met with the same friend, we had to inquire who our server was, that is not good. Everything went downhill from there, but made the best of it once our sushi was served but the experience was aggravating.

Today, I had dinner there with my 7 yr old daughter. There were 3 obnoxious male guest "dining" across the room. I politely asked our server to tell them to turn it down a few notches and it was obvious I wasn't the only guest that was annoyed. I believe the server and the Owner were intimidated by these men. I walked over to the table and politely asked them myself to please lower their voices as I, like many others around me are trying to have an enjoyable evening with our family. Needless to say they were wasted and pathetic individuals. They finally left after another guest threatened to call the police. Guest that were barely seated were walking out. This was ridiculous, what's next??!! (2 stars...

I don't understand how this place is so highly rated. Maybe from a few years ago? I came here five years ago and honestly liked it a lot, so I figured it would still be good. Philadelphia hand roll, lemon roll, baked salmon, eel handroll, salmon skin. The salmon skin was just super oily, over fried. The Philadelphia roll has a huge square chunk of cream cheese. The others had too much sauce. Like, I get it, we got the ingredients listed in the menu, but it seems like there's no care to how much they use of anything, and some of it ended up honestly gross as a result. At BEST it was alright. The staff was very jumbled and all over, but it didn't seem that busy. Everyone was our server, and it seemed like there was no communication between them, which added to a chaotic feeling. I'm honestly the last person to care about conventional service, all of them seemed almost embarrassed. Maybe they knew something was wrong? It was very strange. Maybe this isn't normal, but this experience...

I am a sushi lover. After reading the good reviews, I brought my family to eat here for the first time. What a disappointment!

As we were walking in, there were two young men sitting and standing right by the entrance watching us walk in. They were clearly sushi chefs, but no greeting. Just staring like those punk kids who hang out around liquor store. This made my wife very uncomfortable

Sushi were small portioned and not authentic. Plates were dirty. They looked like they were just wiped with a dirty towel (I could see smears of grease or whatever it was). Edges of plates had broken off and had jagged edges. Udon noodle soup looked like they just opened up an instant udon you buy from Asian markets.

The owner should be ashamed of him/herself for running a sushi restaurant like this.

They have a good location for a business and good servers, but they need to step up on their quality of their food and invest in some new plates and bowels.
