Chapresso — Restaurant in San Marino

Whenever I visit this area, I cannot miss visiting Chapresso. Although it is a small neighborhood store, the taste of the milk tea at this store is truly on a different level from other milk tea chain stores. Instead of brewing the tea in the morning and the drinks are made after customer orders throughout the day; Here at Chapresso, after the each customer orders, the tea is made on the spot using their tea-expresso machine, making hot tea, milk tea (w or w/o boba0, and fruit tea. The customer can choose the ice level or sweetness. I personally like their Barley black milk tea with honey boba, regular ice level, 25% sweetness, so creamy and has strong tea flavor. I also enjoy their fruit infused tea. I personally prefer blueberry hibiscus fruit tea than strawberry. Ah, their Grapefruit fruit tea is so refreshing it is made from only 100% fresh fruit purees with no added sugars or syrups per Josh at the counter. I wasn't familiar with Corn starch-based straws but Chapresso uses it and it's work the same way as a traditional plastic straw. I quickly learned that when inserting a straw into boba tea, you need to insert it a little harder and faster, if it's for the environment, it's something worth putting up with. I stopped by while we were visiting family the area, noticed this new boba place’s soft opening, and excitedly decided to give it a try. I ordered a regular sized Phoenix Oolong Milk Tea with no ice and level 1 (of 5) sweetness. I really enjoy freshly brewed milk tea (freshly brewed after order is placed) compared to milk tea prepared with tea that was brewed well in advance, had been sitting on the shelf for who knows how long, and used only after the order is placed.

What I also found very helpful was being informed that my milk tea would not fill up all the way to the top of the cup if we chose less or no ice in our drink. The reason being that each serving of tea is customized to be brewed with the precise amount of water to each serving of tea for the perfect taste. Otherwise, I probably thought my milk tea got spilled a little bit before they sealed it.

The boba was freshly made, perfectly soft and chewy, and went wonderfully with my milk tea. Also, I liked their 100% compostable straw that didn’t get wet, soggy, & limp even after I finished my drink 2 hrs later. The order labels placed on the sides of each cup, with our names on them, were also easy to peel off from the cup as I prefer not to leave my name on it when I’m done and dispose of the cup.

I grew up in the 626 since 2001. Milk Tea and Boba have been a mainstay of my childhood to adult years now. While I've been glad to see this Taiwanese treat absolutely explode in popularity, some places go to lengths for the frills but forget to take care of the basics — the tea itself.

Chapresso makes tea-forward drinks. You can taste the quality of the brew in any of their menu items (which, by the way, is pleasantly limited which means they can stay focused). What results is a Milk Tea which carries itself without the need of a ton of syrups, flavorings, and a buttload of sugar.

For those who appreciate the taste and craft of tea... I can confidently say that this is a high chance of meeting your standard.
