In General, the food is really sub par and they tend to be very heavy handed with the sauce.

Got both Karage Chicken and chicken wings and it came with tje exact same Teriyaki sauce...possibly one whole bottle between the two dishes. Gyoza is store bought but from the bargin bin variety (think ones with Pandas...). Super soggy center like itbwas revently defrosted... Got the Agadashi Eggplant and Tofu for appetizers and both had higher oil to food ratios that a deep frier at McDonald's. Tempera was mushy or over fried in old oils. Laughable filler on the meal plates (pasta salad using under cooked spaghetti with mayonnaise and black pepper) Appetizer salad was OK and the vinegrette sauce probably saved it. Miso soup had more salt than liquid...Kidney Stones anyone?

Afterwards be prepare to spend a night on the porcelin throne.

But beyond anything else, the waiter we had was the absolute worst since he clearly hated his job. Rude, impatient, unattentive, slow, and disrespectful. Snapped at us when we were trying to decide what to order. Complaimed (yes complained) we ordered too much. Didn't bother to give us clean utensils or plates for appetizers. Didn't give us the dessert that came with the meal because we asked for the check (he assumed we just wanted to leave without even asking).

Will...

This place had the worst rainbow roll I think I've ever had. The pieces were too large - not impossible to eat or anything, but in the size range where it just feels like they are using too much rice. The fish was not high quality and it was cut very thick. It was also a bit of a careful thing to eat; maybe it was just the sheer size of the pieces, but it was as if it was open on the bottom. An $18 rainbow roll should not fall apart on its way to your mouth. The onigiri needed more salt and a bit more filling would not have gone amiss. My wife ordered udon and enjoyed it. The service was very good, very professional. The place had great decor and was super, super clean with maybe the cleanest restroom I've encountered in a restaurant. They were playing the radio, though, which meant we spent a good part of the meal listening to ads. Nothing like the O'Reilly Auto Parts jingle to get you settled in...

Decent Japanese food. Consider only if you are around the vicinity.

Food We ordered a Chirashi bowl $22 and a Combi meal (Salmon Teriyaki/California Roll) $18.

Chirashi Bowl was good though not the real Japanese styled Chirashi bowl. The portion of food is good, fish are fresh and tasty. Overall, good item and decently priced.

For the Combi meal, it was served in three separate bowl/plates which is kinda bizarre. At most restaurants, they would served this in a bento box style. Rice was good, salmon teriyaki portion is huge and ok taste. The California roll and "salad" was below average.

Location/Parking We were here on a weekday evening. It's nested in a really quiet estate, the surrounding area was rather dark with no human in sight. There's a huge parking lot (dark), you can't see the shop from the parking lot, you would have to walk further in before you see the...

Until our dishes arrived I thought this place was slightly pricey. But the food was very good and a fair value and totally recommended trying. The places feels dignified, the host is impeccable - she was friendly and knowledgeable, the server was not up to her level - he was friendly but not quite vested in providing great service nor being fully familiar or finding out about dishes he was unsure of. He was very pleasant, but requests were forgotten and needed reminders that sort of thing. Regardless totally try this place because the food scrumptious. Oh the chairs are armless and accessible and vegan and vegetarian choices were comfortably accommodated by the menu.

My friend and I ordered gyoza for the appetizer and beef and chicken sukiyaki nabemono for the entrée. The fried gyoza was very soggy instead of crispy. It was also extra salty. The sukiyaki comes with a bowl of white rice, which feels unnecessary because nabemono already includes vermicelli noodles (not a complaint but an observation). The soup is sweet. I have never had sweet stew before, so I was excited to try it, but now I know that it's not for me. My friend got the chicken sukiyaki, and she thought it was decent. The place was packed, so we were seated at the bar. There are garages in the area and surprisingly they were all free so we parked in one of the garages.

Best sushi spot on the peninsula. The food, the drinks, the ambiance, the service...it all makes for an incredibly fun evening. Can't think of a restaurant with a happier vibe than Tokie's. Family run, family friendly, a cherished staple of the San Mateo community. The owners, Diane and Vic, are wonderfully kind, welcoming, and hardworking folks. It's not uncommon for them to stop by your table, say hi, and sometimes drop off an extra little treat if you're a frequent diner. Dine at a table, at the sushi bar, or at the drinks bar, which has a TV, making it a great spot to watch a Warriors game.
