This place was highly disappointing, BUT I will give it another chance for one reason that I'll get to later. First off, I was really in the mood for some sushi and I relied on the reviews to choose where we were going to go. If you come here for the sushi, you will be disappointed. The options looked so good, but the quality and flavor were lacking. The moonlight roll was very bland and I'd give it a 2/5. I've never in my entire life had a sushi roll where the cucumber was the main taste and unfortunately that is what happened with the stargazer roll. That roll would have been much better without cucumber at all. Again 2/5. The vulcan roll was the best of the three rolls that I had, but again was nothing special, just average so I'd give it a 3/5.
I love getting green tea at sushi and Japanese restaurants as you will find such unique ones with interesting flavors. The green tea at this restaurant was by far the worst green tea I've ever drank in my life. There was absolutely no flavor whatsoever and felt like they just bought the cheapest brand that they could find. 0/5. It's really disappointing because it's the first thing you taste when you get to the restaurant and so it lowers your expectations right off the bat. We also decided to try the miso soup as well and there was zero flavor to that too. Probably the worst miso soup I've ever had from a restaurant. 0/5. So the first two things I tasted being at the restaurant were a 0/5, that's not exactly how you want to start your dining experience.
Now the reason why I think I'll be willing to go back. We decided to order one of the tapas. We got the mahi mahi and that was actually pretty delicious. I'd give that a 4/5. So it's very possible this place is more of a tapas place. But man if I were controlling this menu, I'd just get rid of the sushi part all together. If you want good sushi, head up to Takashi in SLC. A million times better.
So taking the average of all my scores gives this restaurant a 2/5 based on what I had there. I'm hoping this review will encourage them to take a look into their green tea and miso soup especially and maybe make some adjustments to their sushi. I will update the review if I return to try more...
Read moreI took my wife here on Saturday for an early dinner. I've wanted to try this place for a while. We walked in to a fairly light crowd. After being there for about 15-20 minutes the place started to fill up. Quite a few older people walked in and they seemed to be regulars. The staff is very friendly and helpful with the menu. there's only a few small things I will say that are negative about this place. The worst thing was the smell when you first walk in. My wife said maybe it's because it's a sushi place and I was just smelling fish. I have to disagree. The smell is definitely something more along the lines of a bathroom. We got used to it after a little bit, but it was definitely the worst part. The building is old, maybe an old house. They do a pretty good job trying to make it look nice though. The prices aren't bad but I would have definitely tried more dishes if they were just a little bit lower. We got four dishes in our bill was over $60. Two of them were small plates and two of them were rolls. We got the stargazer roll, the tuna tataki, The sexy shrimp, and one other roll. I can't remember what the fourth item was because I didn't really love it. It was okay, but that specific roll was very close to a roll you get from the harmons prepared food area. That's all I will say negative about the food. The food was actually really good. My two favorites were the stargazer roll and the tuna tataki. I will definitely be ordering them again. The sexy shrimp was good too, it was just different than what I had expected. My wife really liked it though. As I said the place is very friendly and we had an overall great experience. If they could fix that smell upon walking in, the first impression would be much better. I would definitely recommend this place as a place for a light dinner or just to hang out over a few...
Read moreWhile in Utah in late June, we asked some local friends for a good Japanese restaurant and they introduced us to the Mint Tapas & Sushi. Being from So. Cal where there are a lot of great sushi restaurants and having traveled to Japan multiple times where we've enjoyed good sushi we did not have high expectations since this restaurant was located in the quiet suburb of Sandy, UT. Wow, were we surprised. Soy the sushi chef and owner really knocked our socks off with his many inventive sushi creations. Not only were the dishes creative but they were also very good. We sat at the sushi counter and were lucky that at the time we were there, due to COVID, it wasn't as busy so we asked him to create a menu for us based on his selections. Every dish was fabulous. So in late July, when we drove through Utah again, this time on the way to Yellowstone, we wanted to take our kids and grandkids to meet Soy and enjoy his creations. Upon checking his website we found out Mint was offering a special 10 course menu but was only open for dinner and not for lunch which would not have worked with our travel schedule. Since there were so many of us, we thought we give him a call to see if he would consider doing a private lunch for us with his 10-course menu. Surprisingly, perhaps the weather and timing was good, he agreed and our family enjoyed the most amazing meal in a private setting. We will always be grateful to Soy and his hospitality for making our trip to Yellowstone both memorable, super delicious and...
