As you get old, and your feet hurt and your hearing goes vague and misleading, a big bottle of nostalgia is the perfect breakfast condiment, along with a couple of doses of good long term friends. So where do you go 30 years later? Where do you go that hasn’t changed and was perfect in your youth? Zachary’s. Welcoming old decor, aged but not shabby, same wood floors and high ceilings. I mention to the waitress how in the old days, the wait staff would tell the cook if someone looked like they were on hard times and he would pile on the potatoes so they could at least be full for the start of the day. The waitress tells me it’s the same owners and they treat staff like family (and her eyes get a little misty). My friends have pretty complicated instructions about what they want and how they want it and the waitress doesn’t bat an eye. I get those amazing home fries that are savory, crisp, soft in the center and of generous amount and I get the chili which is obviously fresh and simmered to perfection. Clear distinct flavors that have blended, but not been lost in each other, like a good marriage. Was it that good when I was young? Is it actually an improvement over the perfection of youth? It brings back memories of breakfast with Page and Paul when I was but a raw skinny little sprout. Thank you Zachary’s! You put a nice burnished glow on the memories of an old man.

Came here on the recommendations of several people. Was greeted with friendly people and a friendly but timid waiter. He was helpful though. Had the Mike’s mess omelet and admittedly it was very good. Added pancakes to the meal because the waiter said they were their specialty. Wish I hadn’t ordered them. They were paper thin, burnt and not good. My son ordered the French toast and although good had a bit too much all spice for us. Also if you order a soda expect a can with no refills. All in all if I came back I would definitely just order the mess omelet. But it was a bit overpriced for the value we received so most likely I will not be returning. My recommendation to the restaurant show your cooks how to make fluffy and light pancakes without burning them and you would have a hit.

Came here on a Sunday afternoon and had to wait about 20 minutes to get seated for a party of 7. We were there at around 11 am and hungry from the drive from sf. Food: I got the veggie burger and wow were the portion sizes big! There was a really like good mix of hash browns and burger and the hash browns were perfectly crispy which was great. The burger was a bit dry but the oatmeal molasses bread was not too sweet and subtly savory! Service: We were able to get the waiters to add a small candle on the dish of our birthday girl and that was really nice of them! The food came in 20 minutes or so. Ambiance: Nice clean diner area with lots of seating and very simple decoration. Overall, a solid brunch place with vegan options and a cozy homey vibe!

This place was recommended by a high school classmate of my wife who is an alumnus of UC Santa Cruz. We got there around 11:00 on Sunday morning and promptly put our name on the list for a table for four. There were quite a few tables in front of us, but the wait wasn't bad. We were quickly seated and introduced to our waitress and she took our drink orders and gave a quick rundown of the specialties. Based on her recommendation, I had the Mike's Mess, my daughter had french toast, her BF had an omelette, and my wife had something with avocado and eggs (I don't remember the name). Everyone really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere was very inviting! Definitely will be back when we visit our Banana Slug!
