Korean BBQ Spot "Koreana" in the Chicago Suburbs

Koreana Restaurant is located in a stripe mall in Schaumburg, IL. Make a reservation is highly recommended as this is a small, unpretentious Korean restaurant. The place is not fancy and got really busy and was packed with Korean people. It has a cheerful and fun vibe. We ordered a BBQ meat platter and it came with soup and side dishes. Also, we ordered the seafood panini (seafood pancake with scallion, shrimp and squid) and japchae ( stir fried glass noodles with beef and vegetables). We liked the banchans: fishcakes, kimchi, spicy cucumber, spicy bean sprouts, pickled jalapeño and onions and black beans and got endless supply of them. The tossed salad in gochujsng dressing, lettuce with mild spicy bean paste was refreshing. The seafood pancake was extra crispy and tasty. The japchae was a huge disappointment as it was watery and the portion was small like it’s suitable for a child. At $15, we had to return the japchae back to the kitchen for remake. This was the worst japchae we had ever ate. The remade japchae was better (still not up to standard) and bigger portion. Our least favorite was the shrimps because they were simply not fresh and too fishy to our liking. In our meat platter, there was a giant beef bone with hardly any meat on it. Why was it there on a BBQ meat platter?? This place was definitely a miss for us. We learned later that their food quality is not that consistent as other Korean restaurants. Owners should hire professionals to clean the restaurant especially the slippery floor.

If you love Korean BBQ, this place is the best! I’ve been several times and my dad orders each time (so I couldn’t tell you exactly all we got) but we got beef bulgogi, pork belly, and chicken and it was so good. I’ve never been disappointed. I also love all of the little plates of kimchi, fish cake, etc that comes with your platter. This time we also had their miso which was so flavorful. Everything is fresh and it is obvious great care goes into making a great experience. Every time I’ve been the servers are attentive, and the owner comes by and checks in, and he is so sweet! The vibe is casual, and the restaurant isn’t very big so it’s best to make reservations during busy hours or plan to wait. The meat is quality, and the staff helps you set up and cook the meats. Apparently there are little red buttons on the table you can press to summon a waiter or waitress if needed, but it wasn’t needed since staff was very attentive. Parking is easy - the restaurant is located in a small strip mall, so there is plenty of space to park.

So I’ve been here twice in two weeks, each on a Sunday evening. Let me just say that the food is good, really good, but the service… The first time I went with my friend, I loved the place, it was two hours before closing and it wasn’t that busy. The staff were so kind, friendly and helpful. If I was writing this review the first time I went, I would have given them 5 stars. But my most recent visit which was 4/6, I have to give them 2 stars. The reason why was service. Now I understand that they were busy, but they kept doing things that I really didn’t appreciate. So my friend got the pork belly and was trying to cook it to their liking (I’m not a big fan of pork). One person came up and started to cut the pork in half without asking us if it was okay to do it. We let it slide. After the pork belly was done on one side, my friend flipped it to the other side so it can cook as well, that’s when a different employee came and just cut up the pork belly WITHOUT asking us if it was okay. That pissed me off, the least you can do is ask. We let that slide as well. We also ordered the ribeye. I like my meat well done (yes, I like to “chew” for a long time) so as I’m cooking my meat to my liking, another employee comes to turn off the grill saying that the meat was cooked. This is when I spoke up, I told her that it wasn’t and I like my meat well done and to please stop touching the table without asking us first. She’s was taken back that I said that but it was getting to a point where it was hard to enjoy the meal with so many unsolicited interruptions. I turned the grill back on to finish cooking my meat that I’m paying for. The food is amazing, really good, the service,...

I have never written a review on a restaurant in my life but I had such a negative experience here that I just needed to share. I've never eaten KBBQ in my life and I was very excited to celebrate my birthday by going out with my family and having an interactive dining experience. Unfortunately, the staff robbed us of this. Throughout my entire dinner we were never left alone to chat for more than 3 minutes because one of the many staff members would come by and flip our meat for us repeatedly and add more on. It felt like they were rushing to get us out of there even though we made reservations a day before. If I wanted someone to cook something for me I'd go to a regular restaurant and probably end up paying much less. Instead, the whole fun experience of going out for KBBQ was taken from us and in turn I ended up having a very stressful dinner that was cut way too short because of their eagerness to get us to leave.

This is the only gripe I have with my food-related experience. Another thing I'm hesitant even now to add is the fact that one of the waitresses took my phone off the table while I went to the bathroom when I first arrived and brought it behind her counter. I was extremely confused and had to ask for it back, to which she obliged but didn't apologize. I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt and say that this was a mistake but I still think it's worth sharing.

EDIT: I'm now looking at other negative reviews and it appears that them stealing belongings left unattended is common and not just something I experienced.

I won't be coming back and I was robbed of the Korean BBQ...

I wanted to share my experience dining at Koreana Restaurant with you, as it was nothing short of exceptional.

From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I was greeted with warm hospitality and ushered to my table promptly. The ambiance was vibrant and inviting, setting the perfect tone for an enjoyable dining experience.

I opted for their Korean BBQ, and let me tell you, it was a true feast for the senses. The sizzling meats were perfectly seasoned and cooked to absolute perfection, leaving me craving for more with every bite. The flavors were rich and authentic, showcasing the culinary expertise of the chefs at Koreana Restaurant.

What truly set this dining experience apart was the incredible fast service. Despite the restaurant being busy, the staff was attentive, efficient, and always ready to cater to any request. I was impressed by how seamlessly they managed to provide such top-notch service without compromising on quality.

As much as I wanted to capture the mouth-watering dishes on camera, I was so engrossed in savoring every bite that I completely forgot to take pictures. I guess that just goes to show how delicious and captivating the food at Koreana Restaurant truly is.

In conclusion, I highly recommend Koreana Restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic Korean BBQ experience coupled with amazing service. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Thank you, Koreana Restaurant, for an unforgettable dining experience. I can't wait to return and indulge in your delightful...
