Want to share our experience at McCormick Ranch. Unfortunately, our experience on April 24 was disappointing and fell far short of expectations, especially given the high price point of well over $400 for two players including club rentals.
To summarize the concerns:
· The rental clubs provided to us were extremely dirty, clearly not cleaned after the previous use. The towels supplied were also soiled.
· The overall condition of the course was below the standard we anticipated based on our prior visit.
· The GPS system in our golf cart stopped working by the 9th hole. We had to stop at the Starter to get it reset, which disrupted our round.
· When we asked about water, we were told by the Starter that there was none available complimentary, and we would need to purchase it.
However, the most disappointing and frankly insulting part of our visit came at the end of our round. Upon returning the cart and clubs, we were approached by a young staff member who asked if everything had gone well. We mentioned that the rental clubs were quite dirty. His response was, "Someone didn’t do their job," which we appreciated for its honesty. However, the conversation took a turn when he asked where the head cover was for the women’s 2-wood. We explained that we did not recall there ever being a head cover on that club. He repeatedly stated, “The clubs would NEVER have been put out without one,” which felt accusatory—as if we were being blamed for its loss or even suspected of taking it.
We were quite taken aback by this implication. If there had been a head cover, and we had unknowingly lost it, it could very well be found on the course and turned in. Regardless, it was disheartening to feel as though we were being treated with suspicion, especially after an already underwhelming experience. Accusing a guest—whether directly or indirectly—of stealing something as trivial as a head cover is unprofessional and inappropriate.
Given the very poor condition of the course, price to play and overall treatment by the staff we will not be coming back to golf here and would...
Read moreI don’t think I’ve ever taken the time to leave anything but a 5-star review for a golf course, but unfortunately I have to do that today.
I was set to play a foursome with a card holding member of McCormick. Simple enough right?
So on my way to the course, the member gives me a call and says he and his father have to fall out due to both catching an illness that kept them up all night. Bummer. But no worries, he says he’s going to call the course and let them know, but they will still honor the member guest rate. Cool.
THEN he calls again to let me know he spoke to the front desk and all was taken care of. No issue. Bummer that he can’t play, but we will hold it down.
Well needless to say, that’s not what happened. When I checked in, the front desk guy acted like we were trying to take advantage of their process and told me there was no way he was going to extend the member guest rate to me, because “people would just book tee times for their friends all the time then.”
This coming from a guy who just spoke to our member, who plays there 3-4 days per week and is known by most people in the building. It’s not about the money to me in this case—it’s about the principle.
I can tell you that when I had to bail out of two foursomes with Arcis (Stonecreek and McDowell Mountain) last year due to illness, the pro shop didn’t bat an eye. In fact, they were so hospitable to my guests that one of them signed up for a membership after they finished one of their rounds. In today’s world, that’s how it should be done.
On top of this, the course conditions fell way short of expectations, especially for early April. This is prime high season in Scottsdale, y’all! Dead/bald patches, asphalt bunkers and burnt greens shouldn’t be in play at this time of year.
The redeeming part of the round were the support team downstairs, the cart gals and the Marshalls. Super friendly folks.
Hate to leave this, but I have the pleasure of experiencing the customer service of the Arcis portfolio every week and it’s night and day.
Next time, we’ll be playing an...
