We have been here multiple times, it seems the food quality and product have changed.
Without further ado, onto the Food and more:
Brisket - Moist (8): was good, the bark was nice. Yes smokey, not overpowering. As for the Brisket-Lean (5) it was dry and tough.
Jalapeno Sausage (7): Was good. It seemed too soft. It fell apart once we cut into it. It had a good bite. Was warm. If it was hot, could have been a higher rating. I wish it had some grill marks. It seems different from when I tried it previously.
Pork Ribs (6): Have changed since the last time we came by. In the previous review, they were tender fatty, and tasty. This time around, they were on the small side. Also, they were barely lukewarm.
Brisket Tacos (8): The chopped Marbled Brisket was very good inside a tortilla (6.5) and was better than expected. May be pricey but it was one of the better items we tried.
Mac & Chz (6): The last time we tried this, it was a cross between my favorite San Marcos BBQ and my wife's Stouffers... It was semi-liquid and sticky at the same time. Heavier and Cheesy. This time, however, it was cold, bland, and thicker. They changed up from their previous Mac & Chz.
Baked Potato Salad (7): Was a surprise... It did not look as appetizing on the line, but it was not bad.
Fried Okra (9): Fresh hot right out of the fryer! Very good... Crispy and soft, not slimy.
Unsweet Tea (9): Was fresh without any brewery after-taste. Once I squeezed lemons and the blue sugar... It was perfect.
Soda (9) They had Mexican Coke in Fountain Drink, but I settled on Big Red. I also tried the Sweet Tea (8) and was very good. I like warm tea. I'm weird like that.
Service (9.5): Were very friendly as was the owner. There was another lady who was diligent in removing trays, utensils, and trash.
Atmosphere (9.5): Has a similar feel to Hay's BBQ. Nice and open. Love the floors.
And FINALLY...
Previously the Burnt Ends (10+): Were perfection... The second time around, they were a (7). Why? Some hard-to-eat pieces.
The latest time 06/2024, Sunday was packed, they were out of chicken and banana pudding.
It has dropped a star. Possibly two if it remains the same as this next visit in the...
Read morePros and cons...long read! ;-) First the good... Aesthetically the place is great, inside and out. They did very well with the atmosphere. The brisket was almost perfect. I've read a few complaints about it being dry and thinly sliced, but this wasn't my experience at all. So I think those comments can go ignored. The baked potato salad was amazing. The ribs were cooked to perfection. The seasoning wasn't my favorite, but I can appreciate what they were doing, and they were found to be favorable with the family. The coleslaw is what I'd consider perfect as a side...not over-flavored, not under-flavored. Slaw is sketchy territory and they did well. New potatoes were just right as a good side. The sauce was middle-of-the-road for me. I did think it a good compliment to the brisket. Next the less than good... This bit may be a bit silly/picky, but when you arrive and they are slightly busy it makes sense. The queue for the counter is a terrible terrible design. You walk into the front door to be greeted by the middle of the line, which you have to circumvent to line up. There's nowhere efficient for the line to go. There is a misplaced booth located by itself placed where more efficient queuing could be. Just poor design that would be chaotic when things are busier. Person negative - no pets allowed on the patio. Thousands of restaurants in Austin area that allow pets on the patio. No reason it shouldn't be here. But this isn't a strike against them, just a personal inconvenience. Food negatives - lots of tasteless sides. Corn seemed like boring canned corn. Green beans, while "seasoned" with onion and bacon, had little flavor, oddly enough. Pinto beans had zero flavor. As a basic side though, this can work (see above comment about coleslaw). Potato salad was a definite no for me. Tasted like the bulk stuff one would buy from the grocery store. Just not a fan. The sausage....hit or miss really. Personally I found it about a step above store-bought. Not really a lot of flavor there. Some of the family thought it pretty good. I'll pass. I do not want to leave off on a negative though. The place is nice, the staff was super friendly. If the owners read this, I mean no offence by any of the negatives, but perhaps the info could be taken into...
Read moreWhen I walked in at 5:00 pm on a Friday, and the place was a ghost town. Not a single other person in the place (other than the staff). I thought it was closed. But I was hungry, and it smelled good, so I took the risk.
On the day that I visited, I did not see any kind of traditional BBQ restaurant menu, and what they had was confusing, at least to me. I saw no way to order a normal plate (1 meat, 2 meat, etc) like at other BBQ places. From what I saw, they sell meat by weight, and the sides are all sold separately It cost my wife and me almost $80 after we ordered. This place is hands down the most expensive BBQ I have ever eaten at in Texas.
Now, I don't mind paying for excellent food, but that is not what I would qualify this food as. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best BBQ I have ever eaten, I give this place a 5. It was not bad BBQ, but it was definitely not an OMG flavor experience. It certainly was not worth the price we paid by a long shot. The sides were okay, but again, nothing special.
We stayed there for about an hour, and the entire time, I only saw two other people came in. After I left, I passed back by the place around 7:00 pm, and there were only three cars in the parking lot.
The building and décor were nice, but they were blaring modern pop/country music so loud that my tinnitus was vibrating so badly that I was practically deaf by the time we left.
I am not saying some people would not enjoy this place (if you can afford it), but if you are a BBQ place in Texas and only have three cars in your parking lot at 7:00 pm on a Friday night, I am going to go out on a limb and say that the evidence speaks for itself. Which is sad because I believe this place has potential.
I hope the owner reads my 100% honest and unbiased review and they have the maturity and character to receive advice from a highly trusted world traveler and seasoned reviewer with an impeccable record of writing honest and...
