Betty Rae's Ice Cream — Restaurant in Shawnee

We visited Betty Rae’s in western Shawnee on a late summer week night around 8:30pm and the there was a line out the door waiting to order. The shop is very cute and cleaver making me think of the 1950-60’s diners. Indoors was clean and bright with a retro vibe. The servers were attentive and worked efficiently throughout the busy last half hour. They served generous portions of ice cream on top of the cones that I could see while waiting. The line moved steadily. New customers kept lining up until a few minutes before 9pm and 9:00pm is closing time. We really enjoyed our ice and were pleasantly surprised by the delicious but unique natural flavorings. I noticed that my mint chip tasted exactly like actual mint leaves. Not a big fan of this brand but have a gift card to use up and this store is close, so went there. Staff was friendly and competent but needed an additional person to help out. Waited way too long given the number of customers. Ice cream was (always has been IMO) mediocre at best. Strawberry was icy (yuck) and chocolate was way too chocolaty. Plus, got the added bonus of a small piece of hard clear plastic in my ice cream. “Waffle” cone recipe is the worst I’ve had - halfway through was more like a thick flour tortilla. The ice cream was great. We used to live downtown so have been to their original Waldo and river market locations. We went on a Sunday afternoon and it was very quiet. Unfortunately it looked like a stampede had come through. The tables and chairs were unforgivably dirty and the floor looked like it hadn’t been swept in a week. There were also zero napkins on the tables or at the counter. The two teenagers working were very nice but happily chatted with each other instead of getting anything in order.
